The Purpose of SEI

The purpose of the Sheltered English Immersion Program at Cross Middle School is to provide content area instruction to English Learners while developing English language skills through speaking, reading, and writing. In coordination with Cross Middle School’s Language Arts expectations, the English Learner will develop competency and literacy in English using the Arizona State Standards in Language Arts and the Six Traits of Writing.

The reading materials we use are based on areas in Social Studies, Science, and Literature. In our classes, we use the Highpoint Series and various literature to support the content areas that the students may be studying in their other classes.

Through this program, Cross Middle School’s SEI program will continue to support the mission of the Language Acquisition Programs Department, which is to provide students with a quality education. This is accomplished through creating and maintaining a learning environment which fosters proficiency in English, and provides academic support.
