Welcome to 8th Grade REACH Humanities
In eighth grade, REACH services are delivered through a class called humanities. REACH students come to humanities instead of social studies. The Arizona state standards in social studies for 8th grade, are the bases from which the content is taught. The content covers United States and Arizona state government as well as the historical period from the end of The Great Depression through the present time. Lessons require students to use critical and creative thinking skills.

The first semester will be the government unit. During this unit we will explore what it means to be a citizen, the influences on the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the structure and workings of the government. There are a number of projects throughout the semester culminating in a mock Congressional hearing based upon the format of the "We the People" high school national competition.

The second semester will cover the end of the 19th century and continue up through the current time. The emphasis will be on the twentieth century from the 1940's through the 1980's. Because of how recent this time period is in our history, it lends itself well to contributions from family members. Our units will be enriched by guest speakers, show and tell items, etc., so please feel free to volunteer if you feel you can contribute to our lessons.
