Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading program that tests and places students at their optimum independent reading level, guides students to books they can read independently, and gives them a multiple-choice assessment (quiz) on that book. The program is an optional club at Copper Creek. If children want to be in the club, they are to contribute $.50, a new book, or a gently used book. After an AR placement test is given, each student is assigned a "reading range". The students may select AR books from the library, the classroom, their home, or the public library. A list of all AR books is located in the library and on the Copper Creek Web Site. After the student has read the book, he or she takes a "reading practice quiz on a computer in their classroom, in the library, or in the computer lab. The students should be scoring between 80% and 90 % on the quizzes. If the student is consistently scoring lower, the student needs to read easier books. Based on the score the student achieves, he or she is given "AR Points". As the students progress through the program and earn points, they reach levels in the program. The point value to achieve each level is based on the grade level. The top level is called the "Honors Reader" level. At this point, the students receive an "Honors Reader Trophy" which is awarded to them at our monthly "Spirit Assembly". Another reward of the program is the children go shopping with the points they receive at the AR store twice a month. They shop during their lunch hours. I also reward student each time they get to a level by allowing them to choose something from my classroom treasure chest. We do an AR dance when we earn 100% on our tests. Yu can see the children celebrating in the picture above.

Congratulations

to these students!

Facts Based on a Research Study conducted by Terrance D. Paul

The guided independent reading practice that Accelerated Reader provides, improves growth for ALL students, regardless of reading ablilty.

Highly successful independent guided reading (AR) is defined by a score of 85-90% or better on the Reading Practice Quiz.

As long as students are highly successful, the more they read, the more they improve their reading ability. This is true for all levels in all grades.
