First Grade has a standards based report card. Not every standard is reported on the report card. For a complete list of the AZ state standards go to the link on Monthly News. The grades on the report cards are numerals for Grade Level Proficiency and Letters for Work Ethic/Social Development:
Grade Level Proficiency
  • 1 = Making limited progress toward grade level standards(The student is below the level expected for the current
    reporting period. Improvement is needed.)

  • 2 = Making expected progress toward the end of year,
    grade level standards
(The student is at the level expected for the current reporting
    period.)

  • 3 = Meeting end of year grade level standards
(The student has met the end of year grade level standards.)

  • 4 = Exceeding end of year grade level standards
(The student has significantly exceeded the end of year,
    grade level standards.)

Work/Ethic/Social Development
  • C = Consistently

  • O = Often

  • I = Improvement Needed

Daily assignments and tests will be marked with stamps, comments or percent correct. Work/Ethic/Social Development grades will be recorded on the Weekly Behavior Sheets that go home every Monday.

Report Card Explanation
For the academic areas of this report card it is important that you understand the Grade Level Proficiency Key. Your child is on track to meet any given standard if the number 2 is recorded next to a standard. As stated in the key, a 2 means the student is at the level expected for the current reporting period. The student is on track to meet the end of the year standard. If your child has the number 1 recorded next to a standard that does not indicate failure on your child’s part. It indicates an area where extra practice and attention are needed and being given. Improvement is needed for that standard. The number 3 will be recorded when the child has met the state standard. If that has been recorded before the end of first grade, then the goal would be to maintain that standard and perhaps try to significantly exceed the standard. If a child shows significant learning beyond the standard, the number 4 will be recorded. Please note that some of the standards do not lend themselves to ever have a 4 recorded(i.e.:Identifies letter names) If your child’s card shows a majority of 2’s recorded for the first 3 quarters, your child is on track to meet the first grade standards by the end of the year. This shows expected progress. The goal is to have the report card show 3’s next to each standard for the last quarter.

In the work ethics and social development area: a “C” indicates the child is performing the skill independently and consistently. An “O” indicates the child is performing the skill regularly with teacher prompts and an “I” indicates the child needs to work and try harder.

For the area, “Completes home assignments” a “C” is given to indicate all assignments were turned in on time.(This includes monthly reading logs.) An “O” indicates that 1-3 assignments were turned in late or not all. An “I” indicates that 4 or more assignments were late or missing altogether.

We are looking for acquisition of the standards throughout the year, and feel that behavior and effort are a significant part of reaching our standard goals.
