Harcourt Math is used for instruction. In addition, many methods from Math Their Way, Everyday Math and Marlyn Burns are used to supplement the series. The series emphasizes math language and problem solving in addition to basic skills. A math word wall is built to help students remember the math language. A Math Journal is incorporated into the math time. Timed math addition and subtraction facts tests will begin in January. Be sure to have your child visit the Harcourt Brace Website to play math games that reinforce the learning. You can do that by going to Mrs. Pruzin's favorite sites and clicking on Harcourt Brace. My weekly and monthly newsletters and the Fridge Facts will keep you up to date on what concepts we are working on.

I give every child the opportunity to take the end of the chapter review/test before I begin teaching the skills for that chapter. If a student is able to do at least 80% of the skills correctly, then I have other math enrichment activities available. All children are expected to take a test on the chapter again when I am done teaching the skills to those students who needed instruction. This is how I differentiate instruction for math. I will also give different math homework according to the needs of the child. Math homework starts in January.
Students will focus on geometry, patterning, and measuring during the math centers. This center occurs once a week for 25 minutes. Students will also do some practice with the basic skills by playing math games during this center time.
My weekly newsletter will keep you posted as to what your child is learning. It would be great if that concept was practiced at home.
