The Turtle
by Perrwren
Long, long ago, turtles never had shells. They could run faster than rabbits. But when big cats started to come, they were being eaten. They had no defense against the big cats. When the cats got done eating, the turtles hid in the bushes and tall grass.
At midnight, all the turtles grouped up and prayed to the Turtle God. They prayed that they could have shells to protect themselves. Turtle God said, "Okay, but there will be some consequences."
The turtles didn't care as long as they were protected from the big cats. 1-2-3-POOF! They all turned into turtles with shells.
Later on, the turtles found out what the consequences were. They got long necks to stick out of their shell, a short tail, and worst of all, they became very slow. They couldn't run as fast as rabbits any more.
When they got back, they didn't see the cats anywhere. Just when they thought they were safe, the cats came jumping out of the trees. The turtles started to hide in their shells. After about one hour of the cats trying to break their shells, the cats gave up and went away. The new shell worked, but now they can't do the things they used to do.
