Prep. Statistics
Prerequisite: Grade of D or better in Algebra
II/Trig or teacher recommendation
A course in basic statistics and probability. Topics include descriptive
statistics, distributions, linear trends, probabilities, cross tabulation, and
hypothesis testing. The focus of the class will be on the basic statistical
tools and methods used in business and science.
The content of this course will address the Arizona State Academic Standards
for mathematics, primarily strand 2.
Unit One: Descriptive Statistics and Measurement of Central Tendencies
Unit Two: Basic Probability and Expected Values
Unit Three: Distributions
Unit Four: Experimental Design and Hypothesis Testing
Unit Five:
Linear Regression
Periodically
during the course, topics from Algebra I and II will be reviewed in order to
prepare students to for college placement exams.
Assignments and
Grading
Class work, Homework and Quizzes (10% of total grade)
Students should expect 20 to 30 minutes of homework (not including project
work) on a daily basis. Daily homework assignments and class work will be
collected as a packet approximately every two weeks (usually the day of a quiz
or test). Late homework packets will not be accepted. Homework and Class work
will be graded on completion (show your work). Quizzes may be announced or
unannounced.
Projects (25% of total grade)
Each semester, there will be at least one long-term project involving the
application of the methods discussed in class to a topic of interest to the
student.
Mid-term Tests (40% of total grade)
The will be two mid-term tests each semester. Exact test dates will be
announced at least 3 days in advance and occur approximately a week before the
2nd and 3rd progress reports are sent out.
Final Exam (25% of total grade)
