Wow - that was a fast summer!

I hope you had some time to read over the summer.  I read a few books from our library.  Here's my review of three of them:

Maximum Ride by James Patterson.   I didn't expect to like this book, but it surprised me.  The story is centers on five children (ranging in ages 15 - 6) who have been subjected to freakish genetic experiments.  They have had bird DNA spliced into their genes; they have grown wings and can fly.  Their leader is Max.  She and the rest of her flock have managed to escape their cruel laboratory crates and are on the run, being chased by other genetic mutants (teens that can morph into vicious wolves) who are bent on destroying them.  As implausible (look it up, if you don't know that word), as the plot-line is, the writer makes this seem like something that could actually happen, or did happen.  Anyway, if you like science fiction, I highly recommend it!

I give this book .

Road of the Dead by Kevin Brooks.  I really didn't like this book.  It was slow, and dreary, and a little depressing.  It takes place in England in a small boggy town where two brothers are searching for clues about the murder of their sister.  The end is violent and a little exciting, but it doesn't make up for all the earlier chapters that were dull and difficult to get through.

I give this book .

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling.  It wasn't the most fun book of the series, but as a Harry Potter fan I truly enjoyed it.  Much of the story is gloomy and somewhat monotonous, but Rowling wraps up the saga in a satisfying and exciting way, though not without some sad losses.  Rowling says this is truly her last Harry Potter book, but she seems to have left room and material for a sequel.  We'll see.  I give this book .

My rating system:  = not good    . . . .     = Great, I highly recommend it.
