Helpful Information
All students are given a handbook/assignment book at the beginning of the year. Students are expected to write ALL daily assignments down in the book before leaving class each day.
Please get into the habit of going over the assignment book every night with your child. Organization can be a major problem for many sixth graders as they start at the middle school. Although the teachers encourage self-sufficiency from the beginning of the year, it is very easy for some students to get overwhelmed.
Please spend one day a week for the first few months going through your child's backpack with him/her. A homework folder is provided for each student. Please make sure handouts, project guidelines, and notes are kept in the folder whenever possible. A common comment from parents at conferences is that they know their child has done certain assignments, but the student got a zero because he/she never turned them in. Nine times out of ten, they are found crumpled up in the bottom of a messy backpack.
Organization skills will not be learned overnight. Your child will need routine monitoring at home before the skills become a natural occurrence. Most classes will send home a paper outlining specific requirements for class projects. This is a good time to go over the list with your child and make sure he/she understands the assignment and that enough time is planned at home to complete the project by the due date.
Please help your child develop a list of routines for each class. Homework calendars are sent home in all core classes (except language arts). Please check them every night with your child to make assignments are done on time.
*no Neon teacher will allow students to turn in early assignments and there are no lockers available on campus, so if a student can not show an assignment, it is neither not done or is done and needs to be found so it can be turned in the next day in class.
As a parent, you can be the most influential factor in your child's career at school. Please work with your child to establish routines and schedules that will best help them have a successful sixth grade year.
Every THURSDAY ALL YEAR LONG a progress report will be sent home from each of your child's teachers. It will list the student's grades on all assignments during that period as well as a current grade for the course. PLEASE CONTACT A TEACHER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING THESE AT HOME. ALL ZEROES for the CURRENT WEEK may be turned in for HALF CREDIT by the following MONDAY.
There is a homework hotline at our school. By calling 696-5921 students and parents can be notified of that day's assignments in all classes as well as be given advance notice of upcoming projects and tests. It can be good practice for a student to get into the habit of calling the hotline every day in case they missed a daily assignment or to help remind them of upcoming projects or tests. This is also very helpful when a student is absent. Routinely the teachers update this before 3:30 p.m. daily.
If you would like to schedule an appointment for a conference with one or all of your child's teachers, please call the school counselor, Pete Fisher, at 696-5926 to arrange a time. Please schedule AT LEAST one week in advance if possible. The Neon team's scheduled conference time is between 1:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Before and after school times are also available given sufficient advance notice.
