 The Task
We will visit the worlds of Arizona, the Grand Canyon Stat and Australia, the Land Down Under!
    ?What do these two areas on different sides of the world have in common, besides both starting and ending with an A?
    *Follow the pathways in these activity sites and find the many facinating similarities of these two ancient cultures.

DID YOU KNOW?  There are some cultures that did not have a written language to write down their history to give to the next generation.
         ?Without a written language, how do the historians today know about these ancient cultures?  While exploring the web sites in these 4 activities you will find out how the stories and facts of their past can be found, not in books, but through their music, art, and storytelling.

The Process:
  1.  To answer the questions in these activities have paper and pencil ready and title your paper   "FACTS GUIDE - Arizona"   You will  use this GUIDE for Activity One.
2.  On your FACTS GUIDE write in the information about the environment and tribes of Arizona that you will find on the links below.  Read through each site first so that will understand each step, and number your papers for each question.

3. Draw the rectangle of the Arizona Flag  underneath your title.  Correctly color in the Arizona Flag that you see on this page.

Click here  Flag Facts   and write down the facts about the flag.  Why did they use these colors?  How many red stripes?  How many yellow?  What did these 13 stripes represent?
This design, by Colonel Charles Harris in 1911, was adopted after much debate, since some felt that the notion of sun rays from a star was "astronomically improbable".

4.  *Click on the this Dictionary Site to learn the answers to the vocabluary words.

Find Arizona.  What part of the US is it?  The NW, SE, Central, SW, West Coast, or South Central?

Compare this flag with the Australian flag.  What do the colors and symbols mean?

Since this is the Grand Canyon state, can you find the Grand Canyon?

2. Arizona Facts
You will find out the main facts about Arizona.  What is the capital of Arizona?  What is an interesting fact that you discovered about Arizona?

3. What is Arizona's Gemstone?
What color do you think it will be?

4. Southwest Desert Information
Find out how long people have been living in the southwest desert and some interesting facts about the environment.
What made survival so difficult for these people?
Why did these people develop their cultures around natural resources?

5. Native American Cultures
What are customs?  What are the things that make up a culture?  Remember to answer all questions in complete sentences.

6. Navajo History
What does this tribe consider sacred?

7. Animals of the SW
Desert animal and wildlife index!  Click on one or more of these animals.  Write down some information on your favorite animal.

8.  Kagaroo Rat
How does this animal survive the heat of the desert?  Where do they get water in the rainless months?  When and where do they sleep?

9.  How many tribes?
How many Native American Tribes are there? Click on this site and scroll down to the end.
How many would you guess?  You might be surprised!



 

How You Will Be Assessed

All questions must be answered in complete sentences.  Adding any information that interests you will help in completeing these activities.

At the end of these activities you will be given a  Venn Diagram and fill in what you have learned about the similarities and differences of these two cultures.  You will share your research in class and/or small group discussions on the information that you have researched.
