                        Art and Music

What is your favorite kind of music?
Do you like to do art projects?

The Task
In this activity you are going to find some music and art that you might not have seen or heard before.
All people are creative, and wherever they are, the tools that they use, and the images and symbols that they make, are like clues or pieces to a puzzle, that can tell us so much more about their culture.

You will look for these clues in the links below.

The Process

1. In Activity 4 you will be looking at the Art and Music from both of these great cultures.  These sounds and images came from their ancestors.
? As you are looking at and reading about their art, think about these questions:
a. How has their art changed?
    b.  How has it become more modern?
        c.  How and why do the cultures try to preserve their art?
            d. What are the images and traditions that are important to
                 your family and its heritage?

2.  As you go through each site below answer the questions for each site on a piece of paper.  You will be using this information for the project at the end of Activity 4.

Remember! Write your answers in complete sentences.  Click *BACK when you are done with the web site to get back to this page, Activity #4.

Have Fun Exploring!

Aboriginies Ochre Painting
Where did the paint come from that was used, and is still used, in their paintings?  Where does the paint come from that you use in your classroom?

Art Symbols of Aboriginal Art
As you are going through this site copy down some of the symbols and meanings to use in your final drawing/painting of Aboriginal art.

Dreamtime Paintings
Here you will see an artist use the symbols from her country of Australia to create a story about her culture.  Look carefully at how she applied the paint.  Can you explain how it was done?

What is a Didgeradoo?
What is your favorite musical instrument?  You will find this instrument truly different from any you have ever tried to play!

Everything About a Didg!
Here you will find out about one of the original musical instuments of Australia. How are they made?  What tools were used?   On the next site you can listen to one if you have time.  You can easily make one!  Your teacher has the instructions.  What insect is needed to help create the wood to make a didg?  What does a didg player use to make the music?

Didj Music-Listen!
Music with a click on didg...takes 60 sec to download

Yothu Yindi Music Video and History
This modern band will tell about the history of their people and how they combine the ancient instruments with the rock and roll sound.  You can download their music or watch a video of them.

How You Will Be Assessed

#1   After answering the questions from Activities 3 and 4 and filling in the Venn Diagram discuss what you have learned about these cultures through their art, music and symbols.

#2   When you have completed Acitivity 3 and 4  you will do a drawing/painting using the symbols and syles that you have seen and written about while viewing the links in these activities.
!Your work must fill the space of your paper and the meanings to the symbols must acompany your final project.
!Remember, you are telling a story or legend about somthing important to a culture.  How will you use symbols and colors to do this?

Extra credit :Do a drawing using symbols and traditions from your life.  Have a theme that represents what is important in your life and family. Be creative and make symbols that will represent your theme.  Draw on brown paper from a grocery bag to give you project an authentic bark painting look.  Your teacher can lead you to an extra link and the art of bark painting.

As a class, listen to the music from both cultures.  Discuss the instruments and messages of the songs.  What has been added in their modern contempory music?  Does the music you listen to today in your culture use instuments from the past?
