District's Infancy
1893-1920

The rural setting for Amphitheater, along with the shoestring finances, resulted in changing locations for the actual school during the District's first twenty years. The struggle for a suitable school building was almost as concerning as the recruitment of a qualified teacher. The early records are sketchy but school opened in October 1893 with Mrs. Wood as the teacher of eleven students.

The first ten years would see many new teachers with Miss Caroline Mary Hughston teaching from 1903 to 1905 and the District actually built a frame building as a more permanent school in 1904 at the southeast corner of Prince Road and First Avenue.

Attendance dropped below the required eight students in 1910 and the school closed for a short time until Mrs. Martha Johnson essentially went door to door and brought the school enrollment above the required minimum. She made the move to a permanent location for Amphitheater School in 1913 and often used the assistance of Dutch Henry and his wagon to transport students for picnics. This is the current location of Amphitheater Middle School and Prince Elementary.
Lina Nunez's recollections connect us to the 1914-1915 class of Amphitheater School.
