Nash has used Success For All's MathWings program for three years.  We have found that this program helps our students establish good problem solving skills and gives them a good understanding of the math concepts required by the Arizona State Standards.  In addition to this program, we have added additional facts drill to help our children be successful on the Stanford 9 and AIMS tests.
At this time we have completed several units.  The first, Statistics and Calculators focused on gathering data, creating line plots and category sketch graphs, and exposed the children to the calculator.  This unit also introduces the student to the components of the program:  Check In, Team Consensus, Team Mastery, Cooperative Learning, Score Sheets, Problem Solver, Reflection and Log Book. Number Sense was a very difficult unit which focused on expanded notation, standard numbers, place value to the hundred thousands, and estimating numbers by using front-end estimation, flexible and rigid rounding and using number sense to estimate.  The Subtraction unit showed the students how to "make a nickname" which we call borrowing.  The exciting part of third grade is when we reach the unit on Multiplication.  The children need to study their times tables every night.

After intersession we will have a three week ice cream sundae contest.  The students who are able to write their tables up to nine will earn an ice cream sundae.

Homework is very important to the success of the MathWings program.  Students who complete their homework every night achieve high grades on the Concept Check Tests and the Timed Facts Tests.  A Parent Peek is attached to every homework.  This is to help the parents understand what was covered in class that day.
Please take the time to check with your child - he/she will have math homework every night!  Your child will also need to study the multiplication facts study sheet for 15 minutes each night.
