Course Offerings


All courses offer instruction in physiology, components of fitness, diet and nutrition and current health trends as provided for in the Arizona State Standards. The Physical Education Department's task through all course offerings is to create healthier individuals through activity and knowledge. Most courses can be taken many times for either required credit or for elective credit.

Aerobics
Year or semester
no prerequisite
This class is designed to expose the student to techniques of improving or maintaining their overall fitness for a lifetime. This includes flexibility, muscular and cardiovascular health. These concepts are taught utilizing curcuit training, weight training and aerobic dance (including aerobics, steps, and kickboxing). Curricular focus will emphasize those concepts related to lifetime health and fitness.

Total Body Fitness
Yearlong Course
No prerequisite
Students will experience activities that improve their fitness levels in areas such as cardiovascular health, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, agility, power, balance, speed and endurance. These areas will be addressed through multiple exercise modsalities that are modified, such as ladders, cone drills, weight lifting, jump roping, etc. This class is ideal for the student looking for a way to improve their fitness level, lose or gain weight, build muscle, and get in shape for the new sports season.

Sports Conditioning
Year or Semester
No prerquisites
A comprehensive conditioning class designed to improve a student's athletic abilities including strength, power, agility, enddurance, speed and flexibility. This class will include health related curriculum focusing on lifetime well being.

Taekwondo
No prerequisites
Year or Semester
Students will experience a traditional and Olympic Taekwondo curriculum taught by a certified Black Belt instructor. Coursework will emphasize the tenets of Taekwondo: courtesy, honor, integrity, perserverance and self-control. Certified testings will be offered for advancement. Students must demonstrate the willingness to adhere to a strict classroom procedure.

Weight Training

Year or Semester
This course offers individualized weight training programs and aerobic conditioning as well as curriculum related to strength, flexibility and lifetime well being.

Health/Driver Education
Semester only
open to all grades
An 18 week elective course, Driver's Education is concerned with developing skills and attitudes necessary for safe driving habits. The Health Education portion will be a general survey of current health issues. This course does not fulfill any PE requirements. This courseis a prerequisite for "Behind the Wheel" drivers training that is offered through Amphitheater Extension Program.

Tennis
Year or Semester
All Grades, No Prerequisite
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of stroke development, individual and doubles positioning, terminology, rules, concepts and strategies of the game at the basic to intermediate level through participation in individual and doubles play situations. Evaluation through a variety of drills, games and tournament play situations. Daily participation, periodic skill tests and written exams will be used to determine progress toward meeting course goals and objectives.

Basketball

All Grades, No Prerequisite
Students learn advance strategies and skills in Basketball and related basketball games, as well as officiating techniques.

Volleyball

Students learn advance strategies and skills in volleyball such as 3 on 3 competitions, as well as officiating techniques
