The Process

Your group of four will develop criteria to evaluate web pages.  You will look at a variety of web sites that have established criteria and determine what is most relevant for your students.  You will use Microsoft Word or Excel to create a rubric or checklist.

Divide your group into the following four specialists:

Content/ Accuracy Specialist

You will be developing criteria about:

  • accurate, reliable, error-free information - can you find other information that proves the information is accurate?
  • comprehensive coverage - how in-depth is the material?  Do the links compliment the information?
  • pertinent to student needs - is the information relevant for their purpose?
  • cited properly - are the references valid and in a proper format?
Authority Specialist

You will be developing criteria about:

  • authority of the information - what credentials/qualifications does the author have?  Are the credentials appropriate for the topic?
  • who published the web page - where is the document located, what agency published it, is it appropriate?
  • contact information - can you  contact the author?
Purpose/Bias Specialist

You will be developing criteria about:

  • objectivity, bias and purpose of the web page  - what is the goal of the page?  Is there any evidence of bias? What is the point of view?
  • balanced perspective - is the information one sided, is some information left out?  Who else links to this page?
  • fact or opinion - is the information based on detailed information or beliefs?

  •
Currency Specialist

You will be developing criteria about:

  • timeliness of the information - when did the author write the materials?  Has the page been recently updated?
  • current sources - what year were the sources created?  Is that recent enough for the topic?
  • current links - do the links work or are they dead?

  •
