Engaku-ji Temple – Zen Temple
Engaku-ji Temple was built for the souls of the solders killed during Kublai Khan’s invasion.
Daibutsu Great Buddha
These giant straw sandals are for the Buddha in case he wants to go for a walk.
He hasn’t yet.
The Amida Buddha was housed in a wooden temple until 1495 when it washed away in a tsunami (tidal wave). For 5 centuries the Buddha has been exposed to the weather.
The 37 foot bronze figure was cast in 1292.
