The Stamp Act

In 1765, the Parliament, Britain's lawmaking body, taxed America. They taxed them with stamps that were put on papers such as calendars, newspapers, and legal documents. This was called the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act taxed every document used or sold. Colonists who did not have this stamp, would be fined or jailed. Colonists everywhere began to speak out against the Stamp Act. "The stamps are a tax!" the colonists argued, "only elected representatives from our assemblies are allowed to tax us, not Britain!" Cries of no taxation without representation, spread from America to Great Britain.
