The Department of Special Education and Special Services is responsible for the following:
Special Education Amphitheater Public Schools' Department of Special Education and Special Services is committed to ensure a free, appropriate public education for students in need of special education. The department works to provide a full continuum of services for students with disabilities ages 3 through 21. Most special education services are provided within each school. Specialized classrooms are available for students requiring a higher degree of support, and a special school is available for students requiring intensive services. Section 504 Students who do not qualify for special education but who have disabilities which interfere with their learning process are provided accommodations under the provision of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. A school team meets to develop a 504 plan, which outlines the accommodations and services provided for the student to support his/her success in school. Alternative Education Students who desire to participate in alternative education programs may seek assistance through school counseling offices. The district provides alternative education programs at the middle and high school levels. These programs range from a full-day intensive semester-long program at the middle school level (SOAR) to a highly independent and individualized program at the high school level. Amphitheater Public Schools also belongs to a consortium of community alternative education providers and will assist in referring students to community-based programs. Alternatives to Long-Term Suspension/Expulsion For students who are being considered for long term suspension or expulsion, the Department of Special Education and Special Services provides an alternative education program, El Hogar de la Paz. Selected students are eligible to attend El Hogar in lieu of their long-term suspension or expulsion. El Hogar provides educational services to middle school and high school students. Students are expected to attend a minimum number of hours and participate in community service or work experience. Referral to this program is through the district hearing officer and El Hogar teacher. Homebound Instruction District policy provides homebound instruction for students who have a chronic illness or who receive homebound assistance as a result of the Individual Education Program (IEP). The Amphi IEP Info SiteThe Department of Special Education and Special Services works with the home school to coordinate required assistance. Requests for services is made through the building principal or special education advocate. For more information, call Amphitheater Special Education Wetmore Administrative Center 696-5233
