Brief Description

This is a collaborative project in which students will learn about water usage in their homes and in homes around the world.

Academic

• Students will collect, submit, and analyze data.
• Students will determine average amount of water used by members of their community.
• Students will compare their data with data gathered around the world.
• Students will share information with other students from around the world.

• Students will be able to use spreadsheets to collect data and determine averages.
• Students will be able to communicate and present information to other students via the Internet.

• Student will need to have basic technology skills in using the Internet so that they can navigate to different sites using links and bookmarks.
• Student will need have an understanding of how to open a Word document, use "save as" to save it with a different name and retrieve this document when needed.
• Students will need to have a basic understanding of spreadsheets and formulas used to determine averages.

Computers with access to the Internet, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
Student Worksheets created in Microsoft Word with instructions for completeing this Internet project.
Personal Water Usage Charts for all students and their family members that will be participating in this project.
Copy of the Personal Water Usage Chart and Household Water Use Chart on each computer.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Students with special needs will be working next to students that are able to help them with this lesson. The criteria used to assess these students will be modified.

Procedures

• Students will be introduced to the lesson and its purpose.
• Students will be asked to open the Word document titled "How Much Water Do You Use? Part I" which will be on their workstations in the lab.
• Demonstrate how to open, rename, and save Student Worksheet.
• Demonstrate how to open different links at the Internet site.
• Demonstrate how to go back and forth between Netscape and Microsoft Word.
• Complete Lessons 1a - 1d
• Students answer questions each for lesson on Student Worksheet.

• Students will open Word document titled "How Much Water Do You Use? Part II"
• Student record responses on worksheet as they complete each lesson.

Students will be assessed on their completed and printed worksheets.
Performance on individual worksheets will be evaluated both on quality of answers and on effort given during household data collection.
Performance on group worksheets will be evaluated on quality of hypothesis, predictions and explanation of results.
