Brief Description
We will complete a unit on
writing various types of poetry in my language arts class. The emphasis
of the unit is on the Word Choice component of Six Traits of writing. Each
student will post one of his or her poems on my La Cima web page. He/she
will then choose another student’s poem on the web page to rate using the
Six Traits Word Choice rubric which we will have practiced using in class.

Accommodations for Special Needs
-
Students needing extra time to
type their poems (due to poem length or lack of keyboarding skills) will
be able to use seminar time to finish.
-
Students who have difficulty reading
the poem they have chosen to evaluate will ask the poet to read it to them.
-
All SEI and Special Ed. students
are pulled out of my language arts class so no accommodations are necessary
for them.

Gifted students are challenged
during the poetry unit with advanced poem forms. They will also be given
the opportunity to create their own web pages containing their poems.

Students will write their poems
during language arts class.

effective word choice.

One of the computers in the room
(the most visible to the teacher) will be set up on the teacher’s web page
through webedit.

next students who come up.

When all of the poems are entered,
students will go to the computer, one at a time, to access the web page,
access the Class Poetry link, choose a poem, and use the Six Traits rubric
for Word Choice to evaluate a peer’s poem (making sure to give specific
feedback). The rubric (attached) will be the same as the one we use in
class.

Each student will have entered
a poem that they feel demonstrates their effective use of word choice.
-
Each student will be able to access
the Class Poetry link to find a poem.
-
Each student will be able to use
the rubric to evaluate a poem, giving a copy to the poet and a copy to
