The process itself is at different levels to appeal to students at various levels. The computer gives the students different levels for them to work at.
    This lesson differentiates How?
This lesson differentiates by having different levels for each student to learn synonyms and antonyms. In addition this lesson allows the students that will be writing their own synonyms and antonyms for the class to be done with a peer or work alone. The game helps students to practice mastery of information and skill. The extension part of the lesson offers the use of collaboration and cooperation.

    Procedures

  • The students will use the test on what is a synonym or antonym as both our anticipatory set and an evaluation http://www.usingenglish.com/handouts/38.html this test will be given again after their activity as a post assessment.
  • I will describe and demonstrate the activity on both synonyms and antonyms on the website Fen.Com at http://www.fen.com/studentactivities/sameDiff/samediff.html
  • When the students have mastered the activity on fen. com. the students will use Word to write their own set of antonyms, synonyms or both. They will be able to work with others or work alone. They will be assessed based on their assessment score on their activity and on the pre-assessment that they will take again after the lesson. The post assessment may have to be done at another time, depending on the availability of your computer lab.
  • Have the students complete activity sheet.

  • Extension:
The teacher will need to use the students’ synonyms and antonyms that they created and write the words individually on index cards. Put the students into groups of 4 or close to that and give each student a number in each group from 1 to 4. Pull the word out that the students made from the index card. You can write on the board, overhead or on the computer for all to see. Set the timer for 2 minutes for the students to come up with all the multiple meaning words they can or antonyms for that word. At the end of 2 minutes call on a number from 1 to 4 to answer for the entire group. Choose another number from 1 to 4 to move over to the next group. Begin the process again. Students will be learning from each other and they will need to stay on task because they will not know when they will be asked to summarize for their group.
    Assessment
The usingenglish.com worksheet will be an assessment for both pre-assessment and post-assessment to measure growth on the assignment.
    • Synonym and antonym rubric will be used to assess the student throughout the assignment. It is based on a scale of 1to 5, with 5 being the highest score.
    • Synonym and antonym activity sheet. The students will reflect on their progress.
    • The final product will be the word sheet that the students will make using Microsoft Word to demonstrate their knowledge of synonyms and antonyms by creating their own synonyms and antonyms.
