The purpose of this lesson is for students to use the internet to research and set up a budget to decorate a bedroom.
Standard 5: Technology Research Tools
Students will utilize technology-based research tools to locate and collect information pertinent to the task as well as evaluate and analyze information from a variety of sources.5T-F1 Recognize electronic information sources
PO2 Locate information in a resource selected by the teacher (e.g., Web page, CD-ROM).
5T-E1 Locate information from electronic resources.
PO1 Identify electronic research resources.
5T-E2 Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias
PO2 Gather research from a variety of electronic sources and identify the most appropriate information for answering the research question.
Strand 1: Number Sense and Operations.
Every student should understand and use all concepts and skills from the previous grade levels. The standards are designed so that new learning builds on preceding skills and are needed to learn new skills. Communication, Problem-solving, Reasoning & Proof, Connections, and Representation are the process standards that are embedded throughout the teaching and learning of mathematical strands.
Concept 2: Numerical Operations.
Understand and apply numerical operations and their relationship to one another.
PO 2: Solve word problems using grade-level appropriate operations and numbers.
Students will use the Internet to set up a budget. They will be furnishing a bedroom. They have been given a dollar amount they are allowed to spend. They will present their budget, and justify their expenditures.
Students will demonstrate several math skills while using technology to solve a word problem.
Students will locate web pages selected by the teacher. They will employ links from that page to do web based research, and determine which source has the best information for their needs. The students will then use technology to create a presentation of their research.
Use basic vocabulary related to technology.
Demonstrate respect for other students while using technology.
Practice appropriate behaviors.
Access and evaluate information sources.
Computer
Projector
Computer Lab
Introduce the Web Quest in the classroom, then assign the students partners and go to the computer lab to work on the Web Quest.
Product
Based on student readiness (MAP scores)
Introduce the Web Quest in class: http://www.kn.sbc.com/wired/fil/pages/webredecorads.html
Review Technology skills and behaviors.
Divide students into pairs based on their MAP test scores. Students will be grouped according to their RIT range for the Number Sense & Operations strand of the standards.
All pairs will be responsible for presenting their budget to the class. The product will be differentiated by what is required for the presentation.
Group 1 (Rit range 211 - 220) This group’s presentation will include a list of all items purchased, the website they will be purchased from, the price of the item, and the reason they chose each item.
Group 2 (Rit range 221 - 230) This group’s presentation will include all items from Group 1 and some type of graph showing how the money was devided between the different parts of the room (e.g. 50% furniture, 20% carpeting, 20% electronics, 10% miscellaneous decorations.)
Group 3 (Rit range 231 - 240) This group’s presentation will include all items from Group 1 and Group 2 as well as a scale drawing of the finished room.
Students will present their budgets from the Web Quest. They need to have a list of items for thier room along with a price for each and the website where the item can be purchased. They also need to justify each purchase. Groups 2 and 3 also need to include a graph in their presentation, and group 3 needs to have a scale drawing. The graphs and scale drawings need to be 75% accurate to be accepted.
After all groups have made their presentations there will be a class discussion on which budget we should choose and why.
The web pages and calculations will be checked for accuracy. They will also be assessed on the presentation. Presentations must include all items for the group to be considered complete.
