Students are studying the ocean biome. This lesson is part of
a week long study on ocean pollution. Students have already completed
an experiment on oil spills and have tried to clean up oil out of water
using a variety of absorption materials. This lesson continues to
explore ways that oil can be cleaned out of our ocean waters. With
a partner students will read about and look at pictures showing the methods
of cleaning up an oil spill. They will then create a PowerPoint report
showing three ways spills can be cleaned up.
Standards and Frameworks
Technology Standards
Academic
Pre-Requisite Technology SkillsUsing the Internet, paired students will access and analyze primary source photos and be able to identify the primary oil clean up procedures. Using Microsoft PowerPoint, students will create a slideshow with a minimum of 4 slides and 3 pictures with corresponding labels identifying clean up methods that are used in oil spills.
Students must be able to access the Internet and move from page to page by clicking the back button. Students must have general knowledge of maximizing/minimizing documents. Students must have a general knowledge of making a slide presentation in PowerPoint.
Materials
Accommodations for Special
Needs
Gifted students – The lesson gives students the opportunity to analyze and evaluate a variety of primary source photos in depth. Students will be given the option of working with a partner or independently. There is an option to extend their research to explore more photos and create more slides in their PowerPoint. Gifted students will have no limitations on how elaborate their PowerPoint is. Students who finish early can assist other student pairs with the analyzing the photos, using the computer, and navigating through PowerPoint.
LEP (Limited English Proficient) students – Students will be paired with another student to assist in moving around the sites and creating the PowerPoint. Paired students may choose one student to be the primary typist. Paired presentations will let the students be involved but with the help from their partner. LEP students could be required to complete one less slide. They could also be given typing assistance by a parent helper or the teacher.
ADD/ADHD students – Students will be paired with another student to assist in moving around the sites and answering questions. If an attention problem occurs students could work independently, use head phones to block out noise, or be given classroom computer time to complete the assignment in a few short periods instead of one long period. Students work load could also be lessened by requiring that 2 to 3 slides are completed. If typing is an issue students will be allowed to dictate their information to another student, helper or the teacher. Paired presentations will allow students to be assisted with the components of preparing the presentation.
Special Education students – Students will be paired with another student to assist in moving around the sites and answering questions. Partners can discuss the information they are going to put into their PowerPoint. Students may also verbally dictate their information to the other student. The special education student will be given the option of creating 2 to 3 slides. Paired presentations will allow students to be assisted with the components of preparing the presentation.
Procedures
Pre-Requisite Activities - Students have already read about oil spills and how to clean them up. They have written a letter to congress on what they think needs to been done to help prevent them. They completed an experiment on what absorption material will best soak up oil. They have read a book on all the different methods for cleaning up oil in and around the ocean.
AssessmentIn computer Lab students open up the website http://www.itopf.com/clean-up.html. Students will also open up PowerPoint. In PowerPoint students will create a title slide for their PowerPoint. Using the title slide layout students will put the title of their presentation in the large box and whom the presentation is by in the smaller box. (Possible Titles: Cleaning up the oil or Ways to Clean up the Oil) Students will need to know how to minimize and maximize their screens to go from PowerPoint to the Internet Using the start bar at the bottom of the screen students maximize the website. Students will read through the site, reading about the different ways to clean up oil spills. (The reading level on the site may be difficult. Students will use their prior knowledge, from the experiments and books in class, to identify the words they know on the site and search the site for appropriate pictures of ways to clean up the oil. Many of the words can be vocabulary that has been gone over in prior lessons) When searching the site students will choose 3 pictures on the site to use in their PowerPoint Students will then copy one picture at a time off the site by opposite clicking (right click) on the image and clicking on copy. Students will then return to their PowerPoint (maximizing the window) Students will need to go to “Insert” and then to “New Slide” Students will choose the layout with a picture on one side and text on the other side of the slide. Students will put their mouse over top of the picture on the slide and opposite click (right click) and click on paste. Students will type what method is being used in the picture in the large box at the top of the slide. In the text box on the side, students will describe what is being done in the picture. Students will go back to the website and find two more pictures and follow the above directions for each picture. (optional) If students have done the “oil spill” experiment they can also complete a slide of their results graph.
Technology:
Teacher observation on how well students utilize the computer to access URL addresses.
RUBRIC:0 – Student needs help with all technology accessThe fourth section of the rubric also assesses the technology standard of inserting a picture in to a document.
1 – Student needs some help with technology
2 – Student needs little help with technology
3 – Student needs no help with technologyAcademic:
• Oil Spill PowerPoint Rubric will allow the teacher to evaluate the PowerPoint and who can identify the methods of cleaning up an oil spill.
• The Presentation Rubric will allow students to evaluate each other while they are presenting.Technology rubric and presentation rubric have been modified and used with permission from Suzi Cook. Oil Spill rubric was created using Rubistar.
