Brief Description

In this lesson students will view a Power Point presentation about Internet Safety Do’s and Don’ts.  They will participate in a class discussion about Internet safety. Students will design and create a typed poster in Word to inform other students about Internet safety.  The students will create a Word document that includes text and a graphic. The posters will then be displayed in the computer room.

Technology Standards

• 3T-F1.  Use prescribed technology writing or drawing tools for communicating and illustrating.
• 2T-F3.  Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide.

• W-F1.  Use the writing process, including generating topics, drafting, revising ideas and editing, to complete effectively a variety of writing tasks.
• W-F2.  Use correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and word usage, and good penmanship to complete effectively a variety of writing tasks.
• W-F6. Write well-organized communications, such as friendly letters, memos and invitations, for a specific audience and with a clear purpose.

Academic

• Students will create a typed poster that informs readers of Internet Safety in Word that is written to a target audience that includes a graphic, and text (2 do’s and 2 don’ts).

• Students will discuss Internet safety and will participate in the class discussion.
• Students will use Word to create and print a document that includes text and a graphic image.  The students will simplify information from the presentation to write toward their target audience.

Students need to be familiar with the concept of the Internet.  Students also need to be familiar with keyboarding skills.

Materials

• Classroom computer with TV connection
• Power Point presentation about Internet Safety
• Computer classroom with the Word program and printer

Gifted Students:  Gifted students can type more do’s and don’ts and in complete sentences in Word.  Students can change the font and size of the font if they have time.

Sheltered English Immersion Students (SEI): These students will be able to hear and see the English language by watching the Power Point presentation.  They will be allowed to work in groups or in pairs when creating the rough draft of their poster.  They should be given the opportunity to type some of the information and insert a graphic.

ADD/ADHD students:  Instructions will be broken down into specific steps so that they can easily follow along.  In the computer room, students can wear headphones to block out the background distractions.

Procedures

Introduction

1. Teacher will ask, “How many students use technology?  When have you used technology today?  What kind of technology do secretaries, doctors, or lawyers use each day?” (research, computers, type, communicate, email, phone, organize, work, data collection)

2. Teacher will say, “We use a lot of technology every day.  Technology is good.  However we have to be careful at times.  How many of you have been on the Internet?  What do you do?  Did you know there are safety things to do and not do?  I made a Power Point presentation about Internet Safety.  We will discuss what you should do and not do on the Internet.  Later we will be making posters that will show younger students what they should do on the Internet.”

1. Teacher reads the screens and briefly discusses the slides.  Teacher will call on students who have questions or comments to further the discussion.

2. At the end of the presentation, the following higher level questions will be displayed so that the students will be more involved.
 

• What would happen if you gave out your personal information?
• How would you feel if you came across something that threatened you?  What would you tell an adult?
• How would you improve Internet Safety?  (There is no good answer)
• What is your opinion of the Internet?
• What would you recommend to a second grader or another student on the Internet?
3. Teacher will give students time to create a rough draft of a poster on Internet Safety that is targeted toward younger students.  Tell the students the criteria.
The poster should include:
•  a title (Internet Safety)
•  2 do’s
•  2 don’ts
•  a picture


4. Teacher will have students share and will collect the rough drafts. Teacher will assess the rough drafts to see if the students meet the criteria stated above.

Introduction (in the computer lab)
1. Teacher will remind the students about Internet Safety.

2. Teacher will demonstrate how to access the Word program by going to correct icons.  Students will open up a new document.

3. Teacher will show students how to import a picture and how to change the size.  Students will then insert an appropriate graphic and will change the size to fit (Go to Menu bar, Click on Insert, mover the cursor to picture, find an appropriate picture).

4. Teacher will hand back the rough drafts and will demonstrate how to write the title and how to type the text.  Teacher will demonstrate how to make capital letters and do spacing.  Allow time for students to type.  Assist students and monitor the progress.

5. Teacher will show the class how to print a document in Word (Go to menu bar, Click on File, move the cursor to Print and click).

6. Students will share their posters in the regular classroom.  The posters will be hung in the computer room

Teacher will listen to discussions and will assist students in the lab.  Students will be assessed on the following aspects.

• Participate in class discussion of technology uses and Internet Safety.
• Followed directions in creating a rough draft of their poster (title, text, picture).
• Followed criteria while creating their poster in a Word Document and successfully printed the document.
