Brief Description

Students are beginning to use the Internet for both work and play.  Chat rooms are becoming very common with even younger children.  I have several students that are already involved in friendly chats online.  They need to realize that “Stranger Danger” lurks.  This lesson is designed to help children learn how to be safe as they use the Internet for both work and play.

1. In the classroom, break students into groups of 4 to 5 students.  Have them brainstorm “What they Know” about Chat Rooms and being safe on the Internet.  Students in my room were all aware of chat rooms and the fact that kids can go online and “talk” to other kids.  Some of my students were already involved in chatting online.

2. Have a member of each group record the information on one Word Document to compile a list.

3. Break back into groups and have each group list 3 things that they want to know about Chat Rooms and being safe.  Have a student from each group type what their group “Wants to Know” on a Word document.

4. In the computer lab, (or during the day in the classroom) groups of 2 or 3 students will choose one of the articles below to read and review the information.  (Teacher will review links and decide appropriateness for your grade. )

5. Back in the classroom, put students back into their original groups of 4 or 5.  Have students compile lists of what they learned while reading about the dangers lurking in chat rooms!! If you have available computers, this can be done in Word.  If not, have students create lists on paper.

6. Have each group share their findings with the class. Students will teach these safety rules at Buddy Night to their parents.  During Buddy Night, students will use a worksheet to follow and complete activities.

7. On Buddy Night, parents with their students will complete a quiz on Internet Safety.  They will have a direction sheet to follow during the Buddy Night as well.
