Brief Description
The students will create a
written rebus story to be published on the Storybook website- http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html.
This meets the Arizona Language Arts and Writing Standards and also Arizona
Technology Standards.

Objectives
Academic
In the classroom, the students
will construct a Rebus Story using the five icons provided, then edit their
work for proper spelling by the use of Word Wall Words, the use of a Dictionary,
individual conferencing and Peer Editing.
Technological
The students will access the
website http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html,
successfully type and submit their final copy of their Rebus Story on the
Storybook website under the category Shelf 1- Monthly Materials.

Students will need to know:

Materials

The students will need the final

(or a television monitor converter in the classroom) and Internet access
to the website http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html
Accommodations for Special Needs
SEI (Sheltered-English Immersion)
students will have a class buddy to work with during the initial story
writing process that takes place in the classroom. Picture and word cards
can be written out at this time and be used to assist in the initial writing
process. The student buddy will be available to assist in the computer
lab as well.
Students with an IEP (Individualized
Education Plan) will be given additional work time with his/her Resource
teacher as well as additional computer time.
Gifted students will
be allowed to write a second story. This story may be written in a format
without icons and may be a theme of their choice. They may also assist
as editors for the writing that takes place in the classroom as well as
editing any work done before submitting the stories
Procedures
Prior to the beginning of
the lesson verify that all students have permission to access and publish
on the Internet based on district guidelines. Ten to fourteen days before
the lesson go to http://www.kids-space.org/guide/storyH.html
Click on the “Teachers” link and Submit the Class Entry Form. You will
receive a password under which you will submit your stories (it make take
up to 10 days to receive your password).
Day 1: In the computer
lab (40-minute period) have students preview others work on the http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html
website under the category Shelf 1- Monthly Material. Explain to the students
that they will be creating their own rebus story to be published on the
Internet.
Day 2: On the Aver Key
in the classroom, display the website http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html.
Post the “Submit” page. Click on “forms”. Next click on “classroom
computer”, password for class, click “yes”, click “stories based on monthly
icons”. These icons will be displayed on the Aver Key while the students
are writing their rough drafts in the classroom. Students will use and
name the five icons listed to create their story.
Instruct the students that they
will be creating their own rebus story to be published on the web. Have
students begin to write his/her rough draft of their story. This can be
done in a 20-minute period.
Day 3: Finish writing story
and do peer editing, while the teacher is doing individual conferencing.
The students will then write their final draft. Allow 30-40 minutes.
Day 4 and 5: In the computer
lab- (due to the requirement of submitting stories, the class stories will
be sent in two groups of 12. Students will work with a buddy during computer
time, and 12 stories will be submitted that day. The remainder of the stories
will be submitted during the next computer lab time.) - Have the
students log onto http://www.kids-space.org/story/story.html
click on “forms”. Next click on “classroom computer”, password for
class, click “yes”, click “stories based on monthly icons”. The students
will complete the following steps in order as they appear on the submission
form:
I. Write Your Story- the students
will be instructed to transfer their work to a word document using the
copy and paste method. In this program they will check their stories with
the use of a spellchecker. When complete, the stories are pasted back to
Kid Space for publication.

Day 6: In the Computer
Lab, the students will read and evaluate their classmate’s work that was
submitted. They will use the Written Report Checklist provided by the teacher
to evaluate the areas of Capitalization, Ideas, Punctuation and Word Use.
Assessment
Students will be assessed
by the completion Rebus Story using the five icons provided, successfully
type and submit their final copy of their Rebus Story on the Storybook
website under the category Shelf 1- Monthly Materials and teacher evaluation
using the Writing Rubric checklist.
