Brief Description
Students read and analyze book
reviews completed by students across the nation on www.bookhooks.com.
They select a book of their choice appropriate for readers at their grade
level. They read the book and when finished the students begin writing
the book report on line. These online book reports may be completed in
the classroom in the computer lab or for independent homework if students
are equipped with an Internet service at home.

Objectives
Academic
Having read an appropriate
fiction or non-fiction book and comprehending at their independent reading
level, the student will follow the site directions to write and publish
a book report on line using the www.bookhooks.com
site, with no convention errors.
Technological
After writing paper book reports
since the beginning of the school year, the student will apply their knowledge
of locating web pages through the Amphitheater Netscape Communicator link
to publish their book reports on line.
Pre-Requisite Technology Skills

Needs

SEI-Sheltered English Immersion-Pair
with an SEI student and have them read and publish the same book at their
appropriate reading level. This may also be accomplished with the SEI teacher
or aide.

ADHD/ADD-Break task into
small parts and provide frequent feedback to ensure successful progress
toward the completed book report.

GIFTED (Reach)-The students
will be encouraged to use the online thesaurus to increase their word choice
level and write longer and more involved reports. Prior to this lesson,
the more able students will be encouraged to research how to write a book
review. They may have been encouraged to read book reviews from the Sunday
newspaper and the write a book review instead of a book report.
Procedures
-
Prior to this lesson, students
will have already turned in a rough draft of their book reports, with appropriate
feedback and corrections on them.

Verify that all students have
permission to access and publish on the Internet according to district
guidelines.

Before going to the computer lab
instruct students on Internet safety. Advise students not to give out their
own e-mail addresses on www.bookhooks.com
Advise students not to name their school or use their last name. This eliminates
any vehicle for student’s identity.

The students will turn on the
computers and locate Netscape Communicator.
-
Have students access the Internet.
-
Have students type www.bookhooks.com.
-
The teachers will use the TV converter
(Averkey) or projector to show students how to bookmark this site.
-
The teacher will model the process:
Walk the students through the publishing process with a book report of
a book read as a class using the bookhooks.com site.
-
Have students locate the upper
left corner of the bookhooks.com site, then click on ADD.
-
The students should then enter
the title of the book they are reporting on.
-
Students will then begin typing
their book reports in the white box.
-
Click on publish your book reports
on this web page.
Assessment
-
Using the checklist,
the students will enter their own book report next to #1. Then this student
will self-evaluate their own entry with a rubric number for each of the
6 areas in the rubric.

Then the student will seek peer
evaluation and teacher evaluation using the book report rubric.

Teacher will record on the checklist
which students were able to successfully log on to the Internet, locate
the web address, type in and submit and publish their book report and save
it to a floppy disk.
