Brief Description
Students will take a pre and
post quiz on Internet safety. After discussion through a PowerPoint presentation,
the class will come up with a workable contract for using the computer
and Internet safely.

Materials
Accommodations for Special Needs
This lesson has been designed
for English Learners with intermediate to advanced language skills. Students
are paired according to language skill. Students will have access to dictionaries,
and additional computer time if needed in order to complete the assignment.
Procedures
-
Students should take the quiz
to see what they know on safety awareness.

Teacher should use the PowerPoint
presentation to promote discussion among the whole class on the risks and
tips for Internet and computer safety.

Each member of the class should
go to the sites mentioned on the student handout to prioritize the five
most important safety tips for them.

In a group, students will come
up with the top ten safety tips for the group.

As a class they will come up with
a contract for using the computer/Internet.

Retake quiz.

The contract is sent home for
parents and students to discuss and sign.
Extension: Students can
devise the consequences for breaking any of the contract rules.
Assessment
Students will assess themselves
using the Self Assessment Rubric on their
participation in the writing of the contract and write three things they
would change about using the computer/Internet from what they have learned
about safety awareness.
There will be continual assessment
throughout the year as they adhere to the class contract.
