Brief Description

Students will create a 5 slide PowerPoint Presentation as the culmination of our study and research of different countries.

Technological Pre-Requisite Technology Skills

Students must be able to use mouse and keyboard.  They must know how to copy and paste. Students must understand terminology - menu, tool bar, elevator and click.

Work in a group, give special part of the presentation for completion (eg. find graphics to incorporate on report.

Procedures

    Procedures for teaching PowerPoint
    This activity may take as many as 4 lab times - 45 minutes per lab.

    1.  Open PowerPoint Program
                 Click on   Start, Programs, Microsoft PowerPoint
    2.  Click on Blank Presentation
    3.  Choose a Layout - Title Page
    4.  Click on Format
                    Click on Apply Design Layout
                             Students should go through possible layout designs and choose a design
                             Discussion of smart choices for a good presentation such as good
                                    background colors, print size happens here.
    5.  Students create the title page - adding the name of country and their name to title page
              in the text boxes
    6. Students insert a picture:
              Click on "Insert" in the menu bar
                   Go down to "Picture"
                    Slide over to "Clip art"
                    Choose a category.  Each category has many different pictures.
                     When you decide on the picture that you want, click on it once.  A small menu
                            box will appear.  Click on the top icon - with a little blue arrow that will
                           "insert clip" for you.

    Students do not save their work at this time.

    Have students exit PowerPoint and re-enter the information from the desktop.(Starting from the desktop, recreate the slide.) Check for understanding.  Students may need help creating their slide again. Go through the steps where necessary.

    Once students are back with their slide created, have students add a slide.

    In the menu bar, click on "Insert"
                         Click on "New Slide"   OR
                         Click on the New slide icon in the menu
                              bar.  It looks like a white box.
                          Pick a layout - click OK (Choose the layout with a title box  and a text box.)

    You will notice that the design that you chose for your first slide will automatically be on your next slide.

    Click inside the Title box.  Enter the title of your first slide.
                 Click in the text box.  Be sure the "bullets" icon is clicked.
                  Add three facts about the title
                   Insert a picture about the topic on the page.

    Complete at least 5 slides using the above instructions.  Be sure the information is the most important information about your country.

    View your slides in the different views located at the bottom left of the screen.
               Click on the white box icon for the slide view
                Click on the icon with lines for Outline view
                Click on the icon with the 4 little boxes for Slide Sorter View
                Click on the icon with the box  that has the lines below it for Notes Pages View
                Click on the icon  with the little screen to view your slide show.

    Moving a Slide in Your Presentation
              From Slide Sorter View
                      1. Click and hold down the left mouse button on the slide you want to move.
                      2. Drag the slide to where you want it to go.
    Deleting a Slide
         From Slide Sorter View
              1. Click on the slide you want to delete to select it.
              2. Press the delete key on the keyboard.

    Transitions
        Adding transitions to a PowerPoint Presentation is the part that the students have a great deal of fun with.  Advise students to use transitions as accents.  Caution students to be careful with the sounds.  Too many sounds detract from the presentation.
    To add transitions to your slides:

    1. Click on Slide Show in the menu bar
    2. Click on Slide Transition
    3. Choose a transition under the picture of the dog
    4. Choose a speed
    5. Click on apply


    Slide transitions can be quicker by following steps 1 and 2 above and then
         3.  Choose "Random Transition"
         4.  Choose a speed
         5.  Click on Apply to All

    This will give you different transitions to your slides and save you time.

    To add transitions to text and clip art:
         1. Go to Slide View.
         2. Be on the slide where you want to apply the transition and/or sound.
         3. Click on Slide Show in the menu bar
         4. Click on Custom Animation
                       (You can also find this icon in the menu bar - Click the yellow star icon. Then
                         click custom animation.)
         5. Click  on the Timing Tab

        Click on one of the items in the box
        Click on animate
        Click on  another item in the box
        Click on animate
        Repeat until the box is empty
        Click on Preview  box  located to the right of the slide
    Adding Sound
         While you are in the Custom Animation Screen
              Click on the Effects Tab
              Where it says "No Sound"  - Choose a sound effect if you would like one

    To View you Slide Show
         1.  Click on View
         2.  Click on Slide Show
                    Your slide will cover your screen  Click on the mouse to advance your slide show.

    Prepare for presentation:
         1.  Complete PowerPoint Slide Show
         2.  Practice what you will say as you go through the slides

Assessment

Observation of Presentation - The Slide Shows will be observed by teacher and critiqued using the rubric.
Rubric - Brainstorm with the students what they feel are important parts in the creation of their Slide Show.  Create a rubric using these parts along with your expectations.
Report Booklet - Check the booklet that the students used to collect data.  Compare data collected to data used in the PowerPoint Presentation.
Bibliography - The last slide show of each presentation will be the bibliography of information collected during their research.
