Brief Description

With technology becoming such a big part of our lives, students need to realize that “Stranger Danger” lurks.  This lesson is designed to help children learn how to be safe as they use the Internet.

Work in groups or in pairs to complete the activities.

Procedures

  1. In the classroom, break students into groups of 4 to 5 students.  Have them brainstorm “What they Know” about the Internet and being safe on the Internet.
  2. Have a member of each group record the information on  one Word Document to compile a list..
  3. Break back into groups and have each group list 3 things that they want to know about Safety on the Internet.  Have a student from each group type what their group “Wants to Know” on a Word document.
  4. In the computer lab, (or during the day in the classroom) groups of 2 or 3 students will choose one of the articles below to read and review the information.  (Teacher will review links and decide appropriateness for your grade. )

  5. Back in the classroom, put students back into their original groups of 4 or 5.  Have students compile lists of what they learned while reading about the dangers lurking  on the Internet.
  6. Have each group share their findings with the class.
  7. Students will teach these safety rules to a buddy class. Together with our buddies, we will describe three-to-five uses of technology in daily life and discuss the positive and negative impact of the Internet and its use.
  8. Students will compile a list of safety ideas and create a poster depicting the dangers on the Internet to be displayed in the hall.
  9. In the Lab – buddies will complete one of the quizzes on Internet Safety.  Have students keep their score with tally marks.
