Brief Description

Our principal, Mike McCrory, is retiring after eight years at Holaway.  Holaway students love and admire Mr. McCrory and want to thank him, say goodbye, and good luck in the future.  This lesson can serve as a model for any communication of appreciation to someone you respect. It can be used for an end of year project for a teacher, student teacher or a beloved principal like Mr. Mike McCrory.

Academic

• Students will thank a special person by sharing a special moment or event that has influenced them.

• Students will decide which form of technology to use that would best express their message of appreciation: e-mail, voice mail, word document, power point presentation, Kid Pix picture with text, and/or using the digital camera and scanner.

• Students must be familiar and proficient with e-mail, voice mail, digital camera, scanner, and computer programs such as Word, Kid Pix, and Student Writing Center.

Work in small groups of 3-4 students, pairing up special ed., and SEI students with better writers/technology user to help with the project.

Procedures

1. Give the students the problem of coming up with a way to show their appreciation for a special person. It must be a meaningful remembrance of a past kindness, overall impression, or a lesson learned.
2. Give students a copy of the guidelines to follow. They may do their project individually or as a small group of two to four.
3. After the students compose the expression of appreciation, they must decide how to convey their message using technology.

Students will be assessed on the finished product received by the special person.
