Brief Description
English Learners participate
in a WebQuest to solve a local recycling problem. Students will learn about
recycling from various sites around the country. They will explore the
local scene, and then make their own proposals to the local town council
on how to improve recycling in the area.

Pre-Requisite Technology Skills

skills, be able to navigate web sites, and have had some experience with
technology tools such as a scanner and digital camera.
Materials

Computers with Internet access,
printer, "Where Does Garbage Go?," By Isaac Asimov, news article: “Tucson
Recycles Next to Nothing”, AZ Daily Star, 11/4/01. Availability of Excel,
Publisher, PowerPoint, and Word Processing. Optional: digital camera, and
scanner.
Accommodations for Special Needs
This lesson has been designed
for English Learners with intermediate to advanced language skills. Students
are paired according to language skill. Students will have access to dictionaries,
and additional computer time if needed in order to complete the assignment.
Procedures
Be sure to include URL addresses
you will be using.
1. Divide students into groups
of 2-3.
2. Introduce vocabulary from
"Where Does the Garbage Go?"
3. Read: "Where Does the Garbage
Go?" for background information.
4. Introduce the WebQuest
and explain the basic set-up. Briefly describe expectations at this point.

6. Students proceed through
web quest, complete assignments as requested, and select a way to present
information to Village Council.
7. Students will create original
products to inform public of their findings.
8. When products are finished
students will call the chairman of the Village Council to request time
to present at their next meeting.
Assessment
Students will be evaluated
according to the WebQuest rubric.
