Brief Description

This lesson was designed to introduce students to a basic understanding of copyright laws by listening to some examples of recording artists infringement cases.  After listening to thoses examples and reading case studies of when it is unlawful to use other artists ideas, students will identify how copyright laws affect them in their use of technology.  Whether they are using the web for research and writing of papers, or sharing information with their friends.

• Students will compare and contrast copyright infringement by listening to examples of actual court cases and come to an understanding of the responsibilities of an artist to respect the work of others.

• Students will dentify the personal consequences of using the work of others and claiming it as your own.

Procedures

• Student should read the article about copyright laws as viewed on the web site http://eon.law.harvard.edu/~wseltzer/summary.html and the second article located at http://www.templetons.com/brad/copyright.html.
• After reading the articles, students should use the Fair Use Checklist and discuss what they think is fair use.
• As a group students will listen to, compare, and discuss excerpts of songs from Biz Markie and Gilbert O'Sullivan.
• Students will independently listen to exerpts of Vanilla Ice and Queen and answer questions on the worksheet. After they have had time to answer the questions we will discuss their answers and why they answered the way they did.
• Students will take a quiz on "Are You A Good Netizen" and discuss how copyright laws affect their use of the copyrighted material to creat research papers or share copyrighted information with friends. http://alexia.lis.uiuc.edu/~janicke/plagiary.htm and http://www.usdoj.gov/kidspage/do-dont/netizen.htm

Students will achieve both objectives throught discussion and written assessments.  Students will need to  receive a 70% on graded worksheets to pass the assignment.
