Brief Description

Students take pictures of themselves, either with a digital camera or a regular camera, in the school setting.  They will download digital photography, or scan the regular pictures or pictures from their yearbooks.  Students will create a PowerPoint presentation to represent their years at Rio Vista.  The PowerPoint presentation will be used as a backdrop as they sing a song dedicated to their parents at their graduation ceremony. They will video tape their rehearsals and evaluate their performance before the final presentation.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Students with special needs will be placed in groups that are supportive depending upon their Individual Education Plans.

Procedures

This lesson takes several lesson times, I only see my students once a week for 40 minutes.  We first need to select a song that the students want to dedicate to their parents and teachers.  As our next step the students will develop a rubric incorporating the musical elements from our music standards. After learning the song students will videotape their rehearsal of the song.  Students will then use their rubric to analyze their performance and set a personal goal to improve their performance.  Students will discuss the things they see they would like to improve about the performance.  We will videotape and evaluate the rehearsal one more time before the final performance.

The second part of this assignment is to take pictures with the digital camera, to scan pictures from photographs and create a slideshow.  I will assign students to small groups to insure that all students have the opportunity to use the camera, scanner and computer.
Groups will consist of:
Digital camera- students will be given the assignment to use the camera for one week to take pictures of their classmates in the school setting.
Scanner- Students will be asked to take pictures of their peers with a conventional camera and get them developed, bring existing pictures, or use pictures from past yearbooks and scan them.
Computer – Students will be asked to use the pictures that have been downloaded from the digital camera or scanner and create a slideshow presentation.
The slide show presentation will be used during the performance of their dedication song.

We are using our presentation for our 6th grade graduation ceremony, but you could do this same activity and use it for any performance.

Assessment

Musical Performance: Students will be evaluated on the improvement of their musical performance using the student - generated rubric.

PowerPoint Presentation: Students will be asked to write a reflection paper answering the questions:

• “What new technology process/processes did you learn by completing this assignment?”
• “How do you think you can apply these skills in the future?”
