Brief Description

Students will access Internet sites that will expose them to different ethnic groups in the United States.  They will analyze the types of music and describe how music defines ethnicity of individual groups and create presentations demonstrating their findings.

Technology Standards

• 3T-F1. Use prescribed technology writing or drawing tools for communicating and illustrating
• 4T-F1. Communicate with others using telecommunications, with support from teachers, family members or student partners
• 4T-F2. Use technology tools for individual and collaborative communication activities to share products with audiences inside and outside the classroom.

• 3AM-E2.  Describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with music.

Academic

• Students will listen to various types of music from other ethnic groups within the United States and analyze the information.
• Students will describe how music helps define the various cultures or ethnic groups.

• Students will use the Internet to collect data on the different kinds of music in America, analyze the information, and graph the results.
• Students will communicate information electronically with the teacher, parents or peers.  (Depending on who has an e-mail account)
• Students will be able to use keyboarding and mouse skills to access information on web sites and create an e-mail or word document.

• Prior experience with e-mail, logging on, keyboarding, navigating web sites, creating graphs, and skills to create a electronic classroom presentation.

Computers with Internet access, Microsoft PowerPoint or similar presentation program notebooks, and pencils.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Resource students will be seated next to non-resource students for peer tutoring.

Procedures

Week One:  Have student’s interview three adults and three of their peers about the types of music they listen to on a daily basis.

• What category would you put the type of music that you listen to in?
• What do you think of the type of music you listen to?
• What do you think of the type of music your children/parents listen to?
• What kind of music do you think your grandparents/parents listened to?

Student notebooks will be checked periodically to insure that the assignment is being completed in a neat and timely manner.

Have the students create a graph of the types of music that are listened to based on their interviews.

Week Two:  Students will use their journals to take notes on the information contained in the following web sites to answer these questions.  Explain that they will be locating information about the different types of music associated with various ethnic groups within American Culture.

• What type of music are you listening to?
• What part of the country would you find this type of music?
• How do you think that helps define their culture or ethnic background?
• Do you think that people from that part of the country still produce or listen to that type of music?
• If you grew up in that part of the country, do you think you would listen to or perform that type of music?

Students will write a paragraph about one type of music.
Students will compare the type of music from the web site to the type of music they hear on a daily basis and then write about it.  They will identify the types of music heard in different parts of the United States

Students will e-mail their music findings (if they have an account) or write a family member in Word.  They must include:

• The types of music they listen to.
• The types of music their peers and adult friends listen to (information gained from the interviews.).
• The types of music connected to different ethnic groups
• Communication with their parents about what they think is the most important thing they learned from the project.
• An appropriate graphic to be included in their letter

Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

Neatness of journals: are the journals complete, neat and understandable?
Classroom presentation:

is the presentation easy to view and uncluttered?
does it show the connection between the type of music and the ethnic group?
