Brief Description

Students will access Internet sites that will expose them to different ethnic groups in the United States.  They will analyze the types of music and describe how music defines ethnicity of individual groups and create presentations demonstrating their findings.

Computers with Internet access, Microsoft PowerPoint or similar presentation program notebooks, and pencils.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Resource students will be seated next to non-resource students for peer tutoring.

Procedures

Week One:  Have student’s interview three adults and three of their peers about the types of music they listen to on a daily basis.

Have students keep a journal of the types of music they hear on a daily basis, including the music they hear in the background at grocery stores, the mall, T.V. commercials, etc.

Student notebooks will be checked periodically to insure that the assignment is being completed in a neat and timely manner.

Have the students create a graph of the types of music that are listened to based on their interviews.

Week Two:  Students will use their journals to take notes on the information contained in the following web sites to answer these questions.  Explain that they will be locating information about the different types of music associated with various ethnic groups within American Culture.

Week Three:  Students create a graph of the different types of music heard from all around the United States.  Compare this graph to the graph from their interview.  Students will share their findings with the class using an electronic form of presentation.

Students will e-mail their music findings (if they have an account) or write a family member in Word.  They must include:

Assessment will be based on:

Neatness of journals: are the journals complete, neat and understandable?
Classroom presentation:

is the presentation easy to view and uncluttered?
does it show the connection between the type of music and the ethnic group?
Communication to Parents: does it include all of the components that are outlined in the project?
