Digital camera, computer, appropriate software, construction paper, glue, scissors.

Accommodations for Special Needs
This lesson is designed for second language learners. All language levels can participate. Non-English speakers can be paired with advanced or intermediate level speakers

Procedures
1. Activate prior knowledge:
a) Teacher will review examples of photo essays already studied in literature unit from High Point Level C Text. “Lion King”, p. 15.
b) Teacher will show additional examples of more recent photo essays from newspapers, magazines, computer images. Teacher and students will discuss purpose of the photo essay. i.e. the writer uses both photographs and text to tell about a subject.

2.  Activities:
a) Students  brainstorm ideas for a personal photo essay.
b) Students select an idea for a theme for their essay. The theme must represent something of personal significance.
c) Students complete Planning Worksheet 1.
d) Students work together in pairs to take pictures.
e) Those students not taking pictures can be working on their captions. Work should be done in Word. Students are responsible for using Spell/Grammar check. In addition students should peer edit with their partners.
f) Once the student picture is taken student needs to download it from the digital camera in order to use appropriate software to edit if necessary.
g) Students will combine photo and text.
h) Students edit work.
i) Students print project.
j) Projects are mounted on colored construction paper, and displayed.
 

Assessment

1. Students complete self-evaluation form.
2. Students rate each other’s projects on a scale of  1-5
3. Teacher will evaluate student captions on 6Traits Rubric.
