Brief Description

Through a webquest, students will analyze the smoking ban, and draw  their own conclusions to the question, How does the smoking ban in Pima County affect the residents here?

Technology Standards

6T-E1. Determine when technology is useful and select and use the appropriate tools and technology resources to solve problems

3SC-E3. Identify a specific need and propose a solution or product that addresses this need, taking into consideration various factors
3SC-P1. Apply scientific thought processes and procedures to personal and social issues
W-E6. Write formal communications, such as personal or business letters, messages, directions and applications, in an appropriate format and for a specific audience and purpose.

Academic

Students will gain knowledge through expository text and personal naratives regarding smoking.  They will make decisions based on their evaluations of the information presented.  Next, they will write a letter to the Oro Valley town council informing them about conclusions they have made regarding the smoking ban.

Students will use technology to learn about and solve problems.

Students should have experience in word processing and the Internet.  They should be able to troubleshoot their way through new technologies in order to solve a given problem.

Internet connected computer, digital camera, scanner, printer, and any other requested items for students' success.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Students who have difficulty reading may need some extra help.  They can be grouped with better readers.  Students who are accelerated learners may want to try other webquests that can be found on Patti Greenleaf's home page on the WebQuest link. http://www.amphi.com/~pgreenle/webquests/index.html

Procedures

The webquest is simple to follow.  To get the higher levels of thinking, it is important to have high expectations and requirements for your students.
1. Have students read the introduction together.  They should continue through the task and then through the webquest.
2. Students are asked to read articles throughout the webquest and answer the questions given.

Each member of the group will have an obligation to do their portion of the work because all the other members will be counting on them.  Each group will be required to:
 
1. Get into groups of 3-4 people.
2. Investigate the dangers of second hand smoke.
3. Research the smoking ban.
4. Define and analyze this problem from different perspectives.
5. Develop a solution using evidence to back up their thoughts.
6. Report solution to the Oro Valley Town Council.

Use the rubric attached to the webquest to judge student work.  By this, students will know your expectations, and you will be able to see that they have met the objectives stated above.
