Advanced Word Activities

Students will complete three Advanced Word Activities.  Parts I and II provide step-by-step instruction for eleven different skills.  Part III allows the students to create a document of choice incorporating the eleven different skills.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

The students work as a team to brainstorm an everyday problem/issue that is of importance to them.  Following the identification of the problem/issue, the students develop a multi-media presentation to defend their point of view or solution.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 6.

Be a Super Cyber Citizen

Bridging the Technology Language Barrier

This track was designed to be part of a long term lesson. Students need to have an understanding of technology vocabulary in order to make decisions involving puchasing a computer for home use. 
Students will use the information from this lesson to create a PowerPoint presentation that describes the computer system they want to purchase and includes an explanation of their choice.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 1.

Bridging the Technology Language Barrier Part 2-Using PowerPoint

This lesson is Part II of a long term project. Part I of this lesson can be found at the following site:

Students will use the information from the Part I lesson to create a PowerPoint presentation that describes the computer system they want to purchase and includes an explanation of their choice.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Can You Haiku?
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the traditional Japanese poetry form Haiku and write their own poems using digital photos they have taken as inspiration.  Students will learn to import digital photos into a word processing document.  They will then write a haiku to go with the digital photo and use the formatting capabilities of the word processor to format their poems. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1 and 3.

Chat Room Dangers
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
This lesson teaches students the dangers of chat rooms and guides them in learning about chat room safety. Students finish this lesson by creating a letter or report for their parents. Parents are asked to read, sign, and return this document in an effort to educate both the students and parents.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 2.

Collaborative Author Studies
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
As part of a semester-long author study, middle school students will join the program "London Bridges, " in which students discuss authors and books with students in other states and other countries.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 4.

Compound or Complex
Students use a word processor to write five compound sentences and five complex sentences. Students bold the punctuation/conjunction in the compound sentences and color the independent clause in blue and the subordinate clause in red in the complex sentences. Students then edit peer papers. Meets Arizona State Technology State Standards 1 and 3. 

Computer Ethics - Paideia Seminar
This lessons provides a forum for students to discuss ethical issues realted to technology. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1, 2, and 4.

Creating School Web Pages using Composer

Students will evaluate the school's website (http://www.amphi.com/~lacima) and choose pages to revise or create. They will use Netscape Composer to create the webpages.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 3 and 5.

Cyber Safety

Students need to practice safe Internet usage.  This lesson takes the students through sites that will help them comprehend this important issue.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 2.

Cyber Safety
Provides guidelines for students to use when looking at web sites and opportunities to practice evaluation. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 2 and 5.

A Date at Noon
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
English Language Learners join schools from around the world to participate in a data collecting project in which they share their findings on the web. Students try to figure out how proximity to the equator affects average daily temperature and hours of sunlight. Participants in the project all follow the same procedures and submit a final report to be posted on the project web site. This is a CIESE Online Classroom Project.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 4.

Deciphering Fables
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
Middle school students read a fable and demonstrate comprehension and higher level thinking by performing the following tasks.  Students determine two main characters of the story and compare and contrast their individual personality traits. Students then produce a visual representation of those similarities and differences by developing a Venn diagram, a graphic organizer and/or an excel spreadsheet.  Students then examine up to three events in the story and decide if those events could have actually happened or not and defend why.  Finally, students write an alternative ending to the story and rate which ending is best before putting all their information in a word processing summary.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Deconstructing Web Pages
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
Students will be assessed based on their responses to the questions on the worksheet, with particular attention given to the response to the evaluation question at the end. (Is this the best source of information for a science report on aspartame?)  I will be looking for complete, thought-out answers that are supported by the findings the student has made in the course of the lesson.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 5.

Evaluating Greek Myth Websites
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
Students will be able to demonstrate a variety of reading strategies to comprehend written selections. Students will be able to write a paragraph to demonstrate their ability to compare and contrast at least two website in order to evaluate the better of the two sites. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Evaluating Online Encyclopedias
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
Students will complete an evaluation of several online encyclopedias. They will use their research skills to navigate the web sites. Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 5.

Final Multimedia Project

Students will select a topic to research and present to the class in a multimedia format. Students will choose PowerPoint, Hyperstudio or a webpage as the application for the multimedia project.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Get It Straight
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
Students will use cut and paste commands to unscramble a Fable so that it is in the correct sequence in a word processing document. During this lessons students will highlight words that help them determine the correct sequence of the fable. They will also explain why these clue words were helpful. Finally, students will translate the moral of the fable in their own words.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Grandmother and Me
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
Students will join the “Grandmother and Me” project to celebrate stories from around the world on the Web about their own grandmothers. The teacher will register the class on Kidlink’s KidSpace. Each member of the class will write a narrative about their grandmother that answers the following questions: (1) What is the best advice that your grandmother ever gave you? (2) Did you follow the advice? (3) What piece of advice do you think you will give to your grandchild when you are a grandparent? From these narratives the class will select responses and compile a collaborative document to be posted on Kidlink’s KidSpace.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 3 and 4.

Hooked on Books!
An Amphi Ed Tech Lesson
Teaching reading is not always an easy task, but kids can get into it with the help of a computer!  This lesson gives kids a chance to go online to review different books and authors, read choice books, and then do an online book review that is also emailed to the teacher.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 4.

Improving Descriptive Writing with the Thesaurus
Students type a descriptive paragraph in Word. Then, they copy the paragraph and use the thesaurus features to find more interesting words. The two papragraphs are then compared. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1, 3, and 4.

Internet Ethics for Students

Internet ethics is not a subject that is taught in most schools in America. As more schools are using the Internet, it is becoming necessary to teach students about plagiarism and copyright infringement.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 2.

Internet Safety

This lesson involves having a guest speaker from your local police department in to share information about Internet related crimes and arrests in your area.  Students will learn about Internet Safety and then write a letter or news article urging other teens to be safe online.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 2 and 3.

Interview About a New Life
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
The final product that students create is an interview with a friend about his or her new life in the United States.  The students are learning new vocabulary words alongside with new concepts such as "adapt," "positive attitude," "character," etc.  The students evaluate their new life experience as they compare their thoughts and feelings with those of a friend and a fictitious character from the textbook. The new words are practiced separately, within a phrase, a sentence, and a text.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 2 and 3.

Introductions By Way of Bio Poems 
Students will use the writing process, word processing skills and digital cameras to create biographical poems. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1, 3, and 4.

Just Ask!! MAKE AND TAKE A SURVEY

Students create a survey on a topic of their choice, distribute the survey, and then gather and organize their results on a
computer spreadsheet. Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Lab Design WebQuest

This webquest lesson asks students to evaluate the current layout of the technology lab and then come up with a plan to redesign the lab. Students then present their plan to the class.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 6.

Label and Draw the Classroom

This lesson is appropriate for English Language Learners who have minimal English skills.  Students learn and practice basic classroom vocabulary while learning to develop more proficient computer skills.  They will use Kid Pix Deluxe 3 to make a diagram of the classroom, and then create an original plan of improvement.  Students will discuss and compare both plans. Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 1.

Listen, Initiate, Produce and Solve (with LiPS Reading Program)

Literary Techniques Used in Poetry
Students use their knowledge of six literary techniques commonly used in poetry by muniplating a poem in Word with bold, underline, italics, etc. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1 and 3.

My Earth Day Event

English Language Learners will research the planned Earth Day Events around the world. From the information gained they will evaluate various events and select one to attend. Students will choose the most effective way to advertise their favorite event.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 5.

My Old and New Country

Students discuss, describe and display their family histories, their stories of immigration to the U. S. A., the way they adapt to the new culture and preserve their ethnic roots.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 3 and 4.

Newspaper Creation
An Amphi TLCF Lesson
During this lesson, students research a current topic on the Internet and gather images appropriate to the topic.  The research and pictures are then used to create a newspaper article using either Microsoft Publisher or Student Writing Center.  Students write the articles on the basis of the 5 W method (Who, What, Where, When, and How).  Students work in groups and combine their individual articles into a newspaper.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 3, 4, and 5.

Originality and Plagiarism

Students will develop original ideas on a selected topic, expand on and augment those ideas through a mini-research that will be recorded in a database, and create a persuasive essay that includes citing 5 sources of various ideas and opinions on the same topic.  Originality vs. plagiarism is the focus.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 3, 4, and 5.

Parking Lot WebQuest

During this WebQuest students will be asked to gather information about an existing problem in our school parking lot, analyze the current problems and write a description of the solution which they will present to the class.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 6.

Photo Essay

Learners will plan, develop, and produce a visual presentation that has significant personal meaning. Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Poetry Review

We will complete a unit on writing various types of poetry in my language arts class. The emphasis of the unit is on the Word Choice component of Six Traits of writing. Each student will post one of his or her poems on my La Cima web page. He/she will then choose another student’s poem on the web page to rate using the Six Traits Word Choice rubric which we will have practiced using in class.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 4.

Putting Still Images into Video and Creating a Self-Portrait Project

Students will import scanned photos and digital photos into a video editing program (Avid Cinema) and add effects, text, and music.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 4.

Recycling: A Way to a Better Life

English Learners participate in a WebQuest to solve a local recycling problem. Students will learn about recycling from various sites around the country. They will explore the local scene, and then make their own proposals to the local town council on how to  improve recycling in the area.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 6.

Sixth Grade Orientation

In this lesson, students will determine the best way to present our annual sixth grade orientation to the fifth graders.  Students will need to determine what information needs to be included and how to present it.  Students will have a variety of technology tools at their disposal to aid in the decision-making and presenting process.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 6.

Time Travel

Sixth grade students will write an essay in which they compare and contrast  two of the  following time periods: Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages. The final paragraph must evaluate the two cultures in regards to which culture the author would choose to travel back in time to visit. Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 1.

Uh-oh! Sixth Grade! What's it like?

My K-8 School has students from three different elementary schools enter as 6th graders. Some of the 5th graders have attended the K-8 as 5th graders, but many have attended fifth grade at one of two feeder schools. This lesson can be used to introduce all in-coming 5th grade students to 6th grade.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 3.

Urban Legends

Students will explore two urban legend websites and answer questions designed to help them understand, recognize, and learn to evaluate Internet "stories".  Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 2 and 5.

Students use the Internet to create a crossword puzzle using vocabulary words from a story. Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1 and 3.

What's Really Being Said Here?

Students read a factual story about one of today’s real issues/problems.  The students will evaluate the story-rating and judging a number of factors, including content, intent, worth, truthfulness, persuasion and author’s purpose.  Following the interpretation of the reading, the students present their views, judgments and findings in the form of a visual/verbal/multi-media presentation.  Meets Arizona State Technology Standard 1.

Where in the World is My Bear?

Students will use snail mail to send a stuffed animal to a family friend or relative. They will receive email, letters, photos, and other items from their "stuffed animal." In return, students will use all the technology available to them to respond to the correspondence. This lesson can go in many directions and takes students around the world! Meets Arizona State Technology Standards 1 2, 3, 4, and 6.
