Calculating the Number of Days
Between Two Dates
By Sheri Sense
Have you ever needed to calculate the
number of days between two different dates? Excel is powerful and has a feature that makes it incredibly easy to get
this number. All you do is the following few steps:
-
Just enter your two dates that you need
into two different cells.
-
Click on the cell
to contain your answer. You will
need to format the cell to “number” with no decimals.
-
Type the equal sign, then click on the end date, type
the minus key, then click on the start date.
-
Press “enter.”
-
Viola! You have the number of days between the two
dates.
For the advanced users
J, you can even ask it for the “Net
Workdays!” This calculates only the workdays, not the weekends
or holidays. It returns the number of whole working days
between start date and end date. Working days exclude weekends
and any dates identified as holidays by the user. Example:
NETWORKDAYS can be used to calculate
employee benefits that accrue based on the number of days worked
during a specific term.
To do this, you will do the following few
steps:
-
Enter the two dates that you need analyzed.
-
Click in the cell to contain your answer.
-
Click on the function key (fx) just above your
spreadsheet.
-
Scroll down to
NETWORKDAYS* and click OK.
-
Click on the
Start Date, End Date and put in the number
of days that are holidays. Click OK.
*Just in case your NETWORKDAYS is not an
option in your function keys, here’s what to do:
-
In the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.
-
In the Add-Ins available list, select the Analysis ToolPak box, and then click OK.
-
Now when you click on your function (fx) key, it will be
an option.
