The Ever-Growing World of Data Networks
by Tom Gill

Technology in our District is growing by leaps and bounds. Phones and computers are not the only equipment utilizing the data and voice network to communicate and exchange information.  Currently many new technological devices such as Smartboards, heating and cooling monitors, irrigation controllers, security cameras, and fire alarm panels utilize network connections to execute their prescribed function. As a result, the cabling and hardware infrastructure throughout the District is expanding to accommodate this equipment. However, there are many factors and challenges to consider when deploying new technologies on the existing phone and data network.  For the sake of simplification, the following will briefly outline three main challenges the network team must consider when a new technology or device requires network connectivity.

  1. Security.  The new device being deployed must be tested for software and hardware vulnerabilities. This will help eliminate security holes that can be exploited by hackers and computer viruses. This is usually done by working with the equipment manufacturer’s technical assistance team.

  2. District infrastructure. Surveys of electrical power, cabling, and network equipment must be done to assure proper connectivity of the new device. Usually this survey process renders the installation of fiber optic cabling and accompanying network hardware. This can become a real challenge especially when dealing with older buildings with limited space and utilities.

  3. Cooperation and plan. Cooperation between relevant District departments and equipment vendors is crucial to deploy any new network device. Also, a workable plan in the deployment must be well thought out before installation of the new cabling and hardware.

As a Technology Department we are constantly challenged with new ways to best deploy technology that is safe, efficient, and useful. With devices that would never be thought of being networked just five years ago, there are plans to deploy such devices in the near future. With cooperation and forethought these challenges can and will be overcome to bring Amphi into the technological future.
