Attention Internet Users!
by Will McCullen

We are about to make a major change in the district with how everyone accesses the Internet.  Until very recently there has only been one way to access the Internet in the district.  Everyone had to configure all Internet applications to go through a device called the proxy.  When you used an application like Internet Explorer for example, you would put in a web address and your computer would then send your request to the proxy.  The proxy would check to see if that was a permissible site and then forward your request on out to the Internet.  Once your request came back, the proxy would cache the information and fill your original request.  If someone else went to the same site it could then be filled directly from the proxy instead of having to go all the way out to the Internet.  The same process worked for other applications like Windows Media Player, Real Audio and Quicktime.  Well, the proxy is now getting older and can not handle some of the changes that have developed in protocols like the ones that are used by Windows Media Player.  Our newer solution will be to remove the proxy.  This will allow traffic to go directly out to the Internet.  We will still be protected by Websense.  That is not going away.  We have a state mandate to do our best to filter objectionable material.  However, Websense will now be intercepting traffic instead of the proxy handling the load.  If you want you can try it now.  If you had problems in the past getting streaming video to work, this might help you.  We are posting step by step guides on our department website.  http://www.amphi.com/departments/technology  Simply click on the link to Internet Configuration and select the application you would like to change.  The step by step guides will help walk you through the process.  We are not going to be shutting the proxy down immediately.  We will be working with the sites to spread the word and ween everyone from proxy use gradually.  Look for these changes to start in the next few months.
