Technology Department Update News
Spring
semester has arrived and as usual, “things” are busy. In the
coming months, I am hoping to share information on some projects
that we are working on. For now, the following is a brief
status on the Information and Technology Department.
MIS Admin
Computer Specialist – Ryan Stache.
Ryan Stache has joined the MIS staff. He is replacing Penny
Collins as an Admin Computer Specialist. Ryan came from MiSys
Health Care System where he supported desktop computers. Ryan
received his Associates Degree from Pima Community College in
Computer Networking. Before this, he assembled laser systems
with EDI, Inc.
Ryan’s duties
include software support and training for the District’s student
information system (SASIxp). Additionally, Ryan will oversee
the climate survey system. Join me in welcoming Ryan to
Amphitheater Public Schools.
Update on New
Wide-Area-Network (WAN).
Implementation of the new wireless WAN network is complete. The
maximum bandwidth capacity on the old T-1 network was 1.5Mbps
(million bits per second). Bandwidth to the high schools,
middle schools, and K-8 schools has been increased to 100Mbps.
The remaining sites received an increase of 15Mbps and 20Mbps.
The connections are transporting voice, video, and data
communications between District sites.
Tom Gill,
Telephone Network Coordinator II, was the District’s lead person
for this project. He coordinated tasks between the District and
our vendor, Conterra Ultra Broadband. Additionally, he helped
in the design and installation of the network. Tom spent many
hours, including weeknights and weekends, to bring this project
to completion. Other members of the department that assisted
with the implementation are Steve Frost, Raul Bejarano and Adam Dellos. By no means was this an easy task. Everyone involved
in this project deserves a big THANK YOU for their dedication
and efforts.
Note from
the IT Director:
This is just a reminder for the staff members who do ordering for your
site. It has come to our attention that networkable technology
equipment (i.e., laser printers, computers, etc.) have been
ordered from Office Depot. This equipment is not authorized for
purchase under the District’s Office Depot contract for office
supplies. Please remember, the ONLY technology equipment
that should be purchased is equipment listed on our
Technology Price Sheets Web Pages. We authorize,
network, repair and service only for those products listed on
our Web Pages -- products which are compatible with our
network. You may occasionally find a vendor with the same
equipment with a one time special price – but those specials
generally do not include a warranty. If you receive a
networkable product that is unauthorized, please be aware that
it will not be allowed on the network or supported in any way.
Also, additional quotes are not needed when you order from the
Technology Department’s Web Price Sheets. |
