Repair Rundown
Change is Inevitable
By Richard Coca
It seems that just yesterday we here in the
district were computing with Apple lle and llGSs. Then all of a
sudden we were in the PC realm using floppy boot disks to be
able to connect to the network. My, how things have changed. We
are now computing with state of the art computers, broadband
networks and high speed internet, huge hard drives and amazing
amounts of memory. We are in yesterday’s future.
As we progress within the technical world
of computing, we continue to move to newer and more
sophisticated operating systems and newer support systems which
include e-mail, databases and learning software.
Amphitheater School District in currently
involved in the migration from a Novell networking operating
system environment to that of a totally Microsoft environment.
The change is a massive one to say the least. Every computer
workstation has to be reconfigured and joined to the Microsoft
Domain. The setup of the Microsoft servers is also a complex
procedure because it involves the integration of Novell accounts
to the Microsoft environment. Keep in mind, all of these changes
and reconfigurations must work properly the first time. We, in
the Technology Department have already migrated some of the
school sites to Microsoft and they seem to be working fine. As
we continue this process, change continues to occur in the
computer world and much of this change includes operating
systems. Not only do we have to setup the new sites, we also
have to update older migrated sites on an ongoing basis to keep
up with changes in technology.
This December, and possibly during
November, we will continue the migration of school sites until we have completely migrated over to Microsoft. The
process is going to take a lot of hard work and planning but in
the end, we will have accomplished our objective. Yes, change is
inevitable, but in the end, at least for this project, we will
have a much more efficient computing environment for our staff
and students. |
