Educational Internet Websites

By Peggy Steffens

Here are some of the educational sites you can use with your students or professionally.  Many of the sites have been recommended by your peers as sites they found useful.

Graphic Organizers
Cynthia Rolewski from La Cima shared this site that provides a variety of different organizers in all content areas. The documents are in Microsoft Word or PDF and are available in English and Spanish. http://www.region15.org/curriculum/graphicorg.html

Citation Maker
Cathy Burg from Painted Sky shared this great site to help students create their citations. Many teachers have used Oslis Citation Maker in the past for research papers and Cathy shares that you will be very excited to know that the Oregon School Library Information System has totally revamped their website.  They now have great tutorials as well as very useful information for those classes doing any type of research.  This is an awesome site that is well worth taking a few minutes to explore.   http://www.oslis.k12.or.us/

Stay Safe Online
Patti Greenleaf shared an excellent resource on Internet safety. It is important to teach students how to be safe on the Internet to ensure they don't become victims of cyber crime. The site provides curriculum for students in grades K-8 on Internet safety, copyright issues and illegal software copying, downloading, and distributing.   http://www.staysafeonline.org/basics/educators.html

Smarter SmartBoard Use
David Rogers from Amphitheater High School shared this site that provides lessons and interactive tools to engage students while using the SmartBoard.  The site provides ideas and resources in a variety of subjects and includes templates teachers can use in the classroom. http://www.ecarter.k12.mo.us/dept/elementary/fourthgrade/ccrites/etipslesson1.html

The Little Red School House
Niki Tilicki from Wilson K-8 shared this educational resource that provides elementary educational resources and ideas for a variety of subjects including a special section with resources for grades K-2.   http://suzyred.com/

Online, On Alert
An article about the need to teach our students to critically evaluate information on the Internet and to get them to understand that everything on the Internet isn’t true.  They provide links to fictitious sites on the Internet that look true to students like the pine-tree-loving Pacific Northwest tree octopus and the great California Velcro shortage of 1993.
