Gathering Research from the Internet
Technological Objective - Standard 1:
- The students will use the Internet to gather facts for their research paper.
- The students will search under the topic, Dinosaurs.
- The students will use the Yahooligan program to gather facts.
Academic Objective - Standard 2
- The students need to gather three facts they learned about their dinosaur.
Pre-Requisite Technology Skills
Basic keyboarding skills
Knowledge of the Internet (scrolling, going "back")
Materials
A computer with any Internet service.
An averkey
Accommodations for Special Needs
The students will be in partners, this will help the special needs of the child.
Plan B
The students will go to KidPix if we can not access the Internet.
Procedures
- Have the students sit in a group in front of a computer.
- Model how to access the NetScape Key.
- Show the students how to scroll down to the place they will have to type in their dinosaur name and where the "search" button is. It is at the bottom of the home page.
- Type in a dinosaur they are studying and press the search button. While waiting, show and tell the students that they are not to touch any keys when the comets are flying because it is "thinking."
When the computer has accessed the site, scroll up and down and point out the different sites the students can go to. Make sure to tell them, any print highlighted in blue will give them the information they need for their facts.
- Remind them that if they want to "go back," they need to click on the back button and model.
- If the search does not work, they need to go to Yahooligans, and double click on the dinosaur site that is listed. This will take them to other sites which they may not have been able to find when they searched.
- The students will then go to a computer, in partners. The teacher will pass our a piece of paper for them to write down the facts they have found on their dinosaur.
- The teacher can use the averkey to go through the steps again for reinforcement. Use the averkey to model how to exit the program.
Assessment
Collect the fact sheet and assess the facts they were able to find.
