  4. TITLE: COMPOSING RHYTHMS WITH THE INTERNET
  1. OBJECTIVES
  1. ACADEMIC: The students will be able to compose and perform several rhythmic patterns in 4/4 time, using quarter notes, eighth notes, and half notes.
  2. TECHNOLOGICAL: The students will access the Internet to find a particular web site for relevant information.
  1. PRE-REQUISITE TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: 1) turn on computer; 2) gain access to Internet; 3) type in particular address; 4) follow directions at the site

  1. SPECIAL NEEDS:
  1. PROCEDURES:
  1. prior activities included echo-saying and echo-clapping various rhythms, in 4-beat patterns, using Kodaly syllables; other prior activities included echo-playing 4-beat rhythm patterns on various classroom instruments
  2. tell students that today they will be exploring rhythmic notation on the Internet
  3. divide class into small groups (2 or 3 to each computer)
  4. each group types in the addresses of web-sites given above and reads/listens to lessons on-line
  5. at the end of 20 minutes, each group returns to their own seats; in each group, students will compose 8 measures in 4/4 time (they may use eighth notes, quarter notes, and half notes for this exercise in composition)
  6. groups may practice their compositions quietly, if time allows
  7. each group may play their measures for the class, using classroom percussion instruments
  1. ASSESSMENT: Each group will hand in a copy of the rhythmic notation which they have composed (be sure that they write their names on the paper; each group will perform the rhythms which they composed

 

  1. PLAN B: (just in case there is no access to the web-sites on the day of this lesson)
  1. review the "sound" of each rhythm by echo-saying/clapping/playing 4-beat rhythms as a class
  2. go through written notation, using the chalkboard: write and perform each rhythm orally
  3. divide class into small groups, each with handout and pencils
  4. each group writes 8 measures in 4/4 time, practices the rhythms quietly, then performs them for the class, using classroom instruments
