PRE-REQUISITE TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: 1) turn on computer; 2) get onto Internet; 3) follow directions at the website
MATERIALS: HP pc; Netscape (or other means to use the Internet; URL is http://www.pbs.org/riverofsong/ ; printer for computer; a classroom map of U.S.; Real Player installed; speakers or headphones for each computer
SPECIAL NEEDS:
PROCEDURES:
- Prior activities may have included looking at a map of the U.S. and realizing (naming all the states) that the Mississippi River flows through many states of the U.S.; an assumption could be made that there would have been different cultures which developed along the river, and that probably music reflects the difference in the cultures.
- Divide class members into small groups (2 or 3 to each computer); groups use bookmark for the URL to get to the site: 1) get onto Netscape; 2) click on bookmark; 3) click on correct bookmark listed ("River of Song").
- Assign each group one site along the river (there are 21 sites on the map); click on the correct site.
- Students print the web page of their chosen site; keep the page open after printing (click on "print").
- Students explore the various musical entries at each site (click on artist’s name; click on "audio/video"; click on "all bandwidths" to hear audio; click on Realvideo to see and hear video clip; click on "back to artist"; click on "next artist" to see and hear next artist; students choose one additional web page to print (within their "topic" along the river).
- Students continue to gather information about their "location" along the Mississippi; when all information is gathered, students work in small groups to prepare an oral group report, to be given to the class during the next music period.
ASSESSMENT: The students will present oral reports for the class; the reports will be done in the same small groups in which they worked to gather the information on the Internet.
