Sequencing and Writing - Monarchs on the Move
Objectives
Academic: Students will sequence in order the four stages, from egg to butterfly, choose one of the four stages and write a sentence describing the stage.
Arizona State Standards:
R-F1 Use phonetic skills to decode words
R-F3 Use reading comprehension strategies such as drawing conclusion, summarizing, making predictions, identifying cause and effect, and differentiating fiction from non-fiction
W-F2 Use correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and word usage, and good penmanship to effectively complete a variety of writing tasks
W-F4 Gather, organize and accurately, clearly and sequentially report information gained from personal observations and experiences such as from a science experiment, field trips, and classroom visitors
Technological: Students will locate book marked information, and print the information.
State Tech. Standard 1 Students develop the essential technology skills for using and
understanding conventional and current tools, materials and processes.
State Tech. Standard 2 Students know how to solve problems by using current technologies to conduct research, analyze solutions and present results.
Pre-requisite Technology Skills The students should have prior instruction on how to open Netscape and locate a book marked web site:
Materials A computer with Internet access, a printer, and the web site: http://www.mesc.usgs.gov/butterfly/butterfly-life-cycle.html
Procedures 1. Teacher and students will discuss information and prior activities related to the "Monarchs on the Move" unit (Time for Kids magazine; October 8,1999 issue , Vol.5, No.5). 2. Open Netscape, go to Bookmarks and open Children’s Butterfly… Butterfly Life Cycle 3. Class will discuss the four stages, and print copies needed - one per student. 4. Students will describe their stage and color their picture. 5. Depending on the number of students, groups of four will sequence stages and develop a group presentation. 6. Presentations can be shared at the end of the class.
Assessments Teacher observation
Plan B If we were unable to use the Internet students would be ask to brainstorm stages in small groups. Groups would met and decide on four stages and continue with Procedures #4 - 6.
