Make Your Own Puzzle

Objectives

Academic: Standard 1 Language Arts; Using vocabulary words, find definitions and create a puzzle for peer review.

Technological: Standard 2; To discover a way to use the internet to further help with school work.

Pre-Requisite Technological Skills

Students should be familiar with the hardware of a computer and be able to navigate through an internet site. Students should be able to use the keyboard efficiently.

Accommodations for Special Needs

Some students may need help starting this assignment if they are not too familiar with following directions on line.

Procedures

1. This lesson will be used to help students create learning materials for their fellow classmates.

2. Have students type in above URL. The students should follow the default settings for the puzzlemaker.

3. Students should have prepared their list of vocabulary words and definitions before coming to the lab. Have dictionaries on hand for quick checking only.

4. All students need to do is input their words and definitions into the designated box and the program will create their puzzle.

5. Students should check their puzzle for any errors.

6. If no corrections are needed, they may print 2 copies of their puzzle. One as a master for themselves, and one to reproduce for the class.

Assessment

After the teacher reviews the puzzles for definition accuracy, they can be used a review tools or quizzes in the class. It works well to assign ahead of time a lesson of words to each students that they should prepare for the class. Completion of assignment, appropriate definitions and word usage and creativity are the assessment guidelines for this lesson.
