What is Cinco de Mayo?  Why do people celebrate this holiday?  In this activity you will read a short article about the history of Cinco de Mayo and answer five comprehension questions to test your knowledge over the history of Cinco de Mayo.

Directions:

1.  Print out this page before starting the activity.

2.  Have a pencil and a piece of paper to answer the five questions.

3.  Click on the link  The History of Cinco de Mayo and read it to yourself. When finished print out the article.

4.  Click on the BACK button when finished.

5.  Answer the following questions using complete answers on your paper. (You may look back in the article for answers.)

     1.   Why is Cinco de Mayo a date of great importance for the
            Mexican and Chicano communities?

     2.     What did the "Batalla de Puebla" victory by the Mexican army
             demonstrate to the world?

     3.     When is the Mexican Independance Day celebrated?

     4.     Is Cinco de Mayo celebrated more in the United States or in Mexico?

     5.     How do people of Mexican decent in the United States celebrate
             this significant day?
